T/C Contender - Keep or Sell?
I just acquired from a friend a very nice looking T/C Contender Pistol. I am trying to decide whether to keep it and add it to my stash, or list it here for sale. Your advise may help me decide.
It is a pre- G2 model (can not re-cock hammer unless unlocked again) I have no idea when it was made. Serial number is #S326XX. It is stainless steel with the receiver's side, factory engravings, highly polished. I have 22LR, and a .357 Mag. barrels for it in pistol lenghts, also polished stainless, with the standard wood pistol grip and forend. In addition I have a thumbhole carbine laminated wood stock with a schnabel forend, and a carbine length 22LR polished stainless barrel with an adjustable peephole rear sight. This barrel is also drilled and tapped for a weaver base and extended eye relief (pistol type) Simmons scope.
I have not done any school work on this item yet. I thought maybe I could get some of your thoughts on this gun, as to its worth both high and low numbers, and whether to keep it or sell it here.
Also, in your opinion, how does this model compare with the newer G-2? I obtained this set-up for a very good price, (traded for gunsmithing services).
Please do not tell me to sell it and buy an "Encore" for whatever reasons, as that is not the issue here. The Encore's are great, but that is another thread/story.

The pre-G2 Contender has a much better trigger that is easier to work on and improve than the G2 and Encore. The Encore of course was designed for higher pressure rifle type cartridges and as such is larger and weighs more.
Should you want to work on the trigger here is a good place to start.

I would not trade my two old style frames for anything, and I wish I never let a friend talk me out of my S/S frame.
The new G-2's are nice enough I suppose and do have there advantages, but I'll still keep my old ones. It's not that they are so collectable, no matter what the serial number's are. They do seem to be worth more than they were a while ago.
I would keep it and find out how much your going to like it, and then decide.
The S/S frames are not all that old, probably mid 90's I think.....

Nice gun,but I have never seen a stainless one highly polished.All that I've owned have been Matte Stainless?[^] [:)]

Well, I've been listening to you guys. I took it to the range with the 22LR barrels, in the pistol and carbine set-ups. Targets were placed up to twenty five yards, (indoor range) and it shot great, accurate. Did not shoot the .357 Mag. barrel though. Very nice trigger, crisp.
Can anybody tell me what is the most powerful cartridge that barrels are available for?
So far I am leaning towards keeping it. We'll see.
How much $$$ would a gun like this fetch on GB's on a fair listing?0 -

I have a 12" 45/70 with Muzzle Tamer and I think the worst kicker I have is the 10" .445 with no Muzzle Tamer. [^]0 -

For the time being I have decided to keep this Contender for myself, at least a little bit longer.
Today I went to a friends gun-store and found among the odds and ends a Contender barrel "stainless steel" in .45LC and 410 Bore (shotshells). Bought it for a great price. Interesting barrel: rifled for 45LC with a "rifled" removable/threaded choke at the muzzle. The chamber fits a 3" 410 shotshell. Funny thing, a "454 Casull" also fits there, but when I questioned a "tech" at T/C Contender's customer service he said it would be a great mistake to fire it there, and I believe him. The barrel is "frosted" stainless, I guess now I'll have to polish it to match the others. Somebody did a real nice job of polishing the Contender's receiver and the other barrels.
Now I will have to shop for additional barrels. Maybe one in 45-70 (Trap-door). Boy, oh, boy, I opened "Pandora's Box"?0 -
right now i have a 3 frames and these barrels 10" in 7mmtcu, (223 case necked up to 7mm) Super 14 in 223 , super 16 in 223 , 21" carbine in 223 , 21" carbine in 7x30 waters (30-30 necked down to 7mm ) and a 45cal black powder barrel , plus 2 encore frames and barrels [:D] once you get started it hard to stop [:D]

Your are right gskyhawk I have 2 contenders frames and 20 barrels also have 4 encores with 30 or so barrels. AND BOY ARE THEY A GREAT GUN [:D][:)] And for the most powerful 1's would be the 411 JDJ or 375 JDJ now there is a handfull oh ya 50ae [:D] 0
