shooting a 1873 22

I have an 1873 Winchester in 22 cal I had the gun checked out by a gunsmith and everything checks out in very good condition. in 1873 they only had black powder. the gun is built on the same frame and barrel as the large calibers is there any 22 cal ammo that I can shoot in this gun, Any help would be appreciated.

    I'm very surprised you haven't gotten any replies from the experts. I can't help you because the only '73 in .22rf that I ever owned was one that the barrel had been sleeved. I bought it as a trader, not a shooter. So I never did shoot it. This reply should move your question back to the top of the list though. Maybe this time you'll get some real help with this question.     I must have somehow missed this post when it was first posted... sorry.

    To answer your question, yes, you can shoot any modern .22 ammo that properly fits your rifle. The Model 1873 .22 caliber rifle was either chambered for 22 Short, or 22 Long (never Long Rifle). Most common was the 22 Short. All currently manufactured 22 Short ammo is perfectly safe in the Model 1873 (same for 22 Long).
