service rifle shooters use 20 inch. space gun shooters use 24" and some 26". the longer the heavier but the longer the sight radius the better for open sights.

26"-28" should just about max it out.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

There are an awful lot of variables to determine proper barrel length for max velocity. In general, somewhere between 22"-28". Longer is going to give higher velocity and better accuracy, but after a certain point velocity increase is negligeble. Adding 6" of barrrel isn't really worth it for 20 or 30 FPS.

What application is it going to be used in? Varmint gun or what? this might help narrow it down.

In general, the longer the barrel the more velocity, the more downrange. However the increased velocity will overpenetrate with a FMJ, and have little penetration with a hollow point. The increased velocity would cause the hollow point to explode. The shorter barreled rifles would cause the hollow point to penetrate deeper, and even in some cases not open up at all. I hunt with an 11-1/2 inch AR15 with a 5.5 inch flash hider and have had no problems whatsoever on varmints and hogs. The 11.5 inch barrel loses no more than 300fps.over a 22inch. Use 1/9 twist on a variety of bullet weights.55-69grain. use 1/7 twist for your 62grain. 1/8 twist is for 69-75grain heavy stuff. 1/9 is what the shooting clubs prefer. CHECK OUT THIS SIGHT FOR DETAILS ON BARREL LENGTH AND VELOCITY WITH VARIOUS POWDERS.

OH forgot, the 1/12 twist is for your varmint, super hot, 40-45 grain stuff. Pay attention to the twist. IF you shoot a super fast bullet out of a 1/7 twist, it will liteally strip the jacket off of the bullet. The lighter bullets need less twist, and the heavy bullets need lots of twist. 0 -
I prefer 24" barrels for 62 to 69 grainers.
