Short, 239 is smaller model of the 229. 239 7 round capacity in 357 & 40, 8 round in 9MM. 229 10 round capacity. SIG may have uped the capacity on the 229 in some states, not sure.

The Sig 239 is a single stack magazine which makes the grips more narrow. I know it fits my hand much better that the 229. However, the recoil may seem greater in the smaller pistol but if you have a better grip on it, it shouldn't matter. Both are excellent pistols.
