What is abbrev "FAL"

I do not know if my brain is cavitating or what.

I can't call to mind what 'FAL' means.
I seem to remember that 'FN' is 'Fabrique National', a French gunmaker.

This all started after reading someones post regarding a 308 military rifle.

  Actually Fabrique National Herstal is located in Leige Belgium, not France. They own Winchester and Browning.

  FN is owned by Giat, the French defense contractor. It's not French in location, but it is by ownership.

  Hey Dead Monkey, isn't FN out of the clutches of the dreaded Giat? I thought that reverted awhile back? Well, I'm not sure anyway, but do you have any kind of news article or anything that might clarify? Just curious.
