Which rifled barrel to buy for REM 870
Looking to get a rifled barrel for Rem 870 Express Magnum. Gun will shoot 2 3/4 or 3" shells & has matte black finish.
Factory Remington barrels ok or should I really step up to a Hastings barrel. I definately want to scope it and rarely if ever shoot over 100 yards.

are you setting this gun up just for deer hunting? or will it be used with a field barrel also ? 0 -
Strictly deer hunting. I have a regular smoothbore barrel and chokes for everything else, but want an accurate deer gun to replace deer rifle. Unfortunately, can't scope vent. rib barrel I have on it now and I'm not sold on rifled chokes either, so looking for inexpensive slug barrel.

Unfortunately, inexpensive and slug barrel don't seem to go together.
If I remember correctly, the rifled choke tube shot nearly as well as the full rifled bore to 100 yards. There was about a 4 page article in Shooting Times Magazine about 3 or 4 years ago. I ended up buying another 870 Express for about $120 more than just a barrel a few years ago. You might look around at gun shows this time of year. Otherwise, Mossberg does make a rifled slug barrel for the 870. Seems like they are around $135 and various styles of Hastings go for $175 to $250. Try www.cabellas.com

I got a Hastings rifled slug barrel, 20" with extended scope rail for my 870 Exp. Mag. last winter for pretty inexpensive ~ $100. Was just looking for something to hunt boars with a few times, so I dont think it cost me all that much. Put a red dot scope on it and it shoots good groups at 100 yds with either sabot or rifled slugs. If you will do e##y, there are a couple there now for around $100. 0 -
I also have the 20 bbl and have good luck with a tasco 2.5x bantam mounted on a reciever mount. That way, I can use the scope also for turkeys with an extra full choke in my smooth bore. Just site it in dead to nuts with the rifled bbl at 100 yrds and the pattern keeps pretty well for the #4 turkey loads at 30-40 yrds. If you have use for a scope only on the rifled bbl and to be sure that it will be dead on at longer ranges, I would get a 24" bbl with the cantilever mount that keeps the scope with the bbl. earl, that is a great idea.
Don't have to worry about sripping/buggering up the mounting screws, even if you don't mind remounting and sighting each season.
