Python(Made 1990): Worse quality than 1970-80's?
Colt Python(Made in 1990?)quality level?:
1)How does the quality of the above Python, compare with the quality(On average?)with the Python's made in the 1970's and 1980's(And, later 1990's)? NOTE: Although I realize, that each individual Python, must be judged on it's own merit's, I would like to know your opinion's on how the Python quality might have been(In 1990, shortly after the Colt "Strike" years?)and prior to that, in the 1970's?
2)There should be enough Python owners out there, to enable them to give me a fair assessment of their experiences with their 1970 through 1990's made Pythons?
3)Is $800 too much to pay for a 1990(4-inch)Royal Blue Python(NIB, but no papers)with Colt(Rubber)grips? Or, would it be worth it, to pay this much, for this specific year made, Python?
4)Please list any problems or any other quality control issues, that you might have experienced(And, in terms of whether or not your 1990's Pythons were any better or worse, than in the 1970's -80's?)? Generally, if Python quality was "Unbefitting" of what a Python should be(On the whole?)then, I'd want to pass buying the 1990 Python I'm considering buying? On the othr hand, if 1990, turned out to be a pretty good year(For Python quality?)then, I'd want to buy it?

Mine is a 1961 vintage and comparing that to a 1990's Python is like comparing a Swiss watch to a Timex. Both tell time, but...

That time period has proved to be somewhat problematic, but I feel alot of that is sorta' overblown. My experience with Pythons over the years (of WHATEVER vintage) has been generally pleasant, but then I am a Smith man all the way. I have never liked the triggers on the Colt's products, at least if it was left stock, when compared to a factory Smith trigger. I have heard of few failures on the Pythons, but the one I remember fairly clearly (1989 produced, I think)was a yoke metalurgical flaw that nearly cost a friend a few fingers. The situation was taken care of by Colt's free of charge (read that to mean they were all over the idea of avoiding the lawsuit I'm sure)and the gun still resides with my friend Bill who simply swears by his various Colt's (although I feel I swear AT mine more than by them!)and won't convert over from the darkside!(Joke(s) intended here!)
As far as the $800 sum goes for a NIB minus the box? Just a little too high. $650 to $700 would be much more appropriate. I would urge you to go for the older 357 anyway. I feel the value will eventually reach that of the Pythons. One fairly simple rule of collecting is to go for something by a famous maker that was done in small quantity, and with that few factory Colt's 357's made, the smart money rides on the older gun. Up to you, but that's my take on it.

I have 4 pythons, 2 that I SHOOT AND 2 NIB, ALL 1970's. The 4" I just bought in nickel was built in 1971 is ever bit as tight as the 2 NIB. Very tight shooter! The used 6",when I bought it the previous owner try to work the trigger and failed. But it was better than most. Because of how nice the 2" is I'm going to send the 6" back to Colt and have a trigger replacement and put a red dot on it and hunt with it! I paid $625 for the 2"N. Jeronimo. 0
