Once you get up to the level of the 300 Win Mag, 300 Weatherby Mag, or 300 Ultra Mag, I don't think it makes much difference in regards to performance. Except, I believe that 300 Win Mag guns and ammo are more readily available, and the 300 Win Mag is inherently accurate (e.g., it been used by 1000 yd benchrest shooters for years, and at one time held the world record). I have a 300 Win Mag and can testify to its inherent accuracy and performance, especially when reloaded. I like Reloader 25 (83 grains) with 180 grain Nosler BTs. Regards, AI User.

as far as ballistics are concerned the rum and weatherby .300 are identical.......remember when looking at ballistic #'s weatherby tends to use a 26in barrell whil others use a 24in

imay not know it all.....but at least I know that!

According to Remingtons first sales literature when the Rummy was intro'd it surpassed the Weatherby.
But the info was blanantly deliberately deceiving.

Weatherby & Winchester perform best with 26" barrels, but the Weatherby still out does the Win..
When the Rummy was tested it was with a special test barrel....you can't buy. Plus it was 28".

Powder grain for grain the Weatherby has the best performance which is largely due to the case shape.

The Rummy should be compared with the 30-378 Weatherby due to powder capacity, and even then the Rummy is behind.
It will be easier world wide to buy Weatherby over the 300 Ultra.

Where and how do you want to use it? 1000yd target? Hunting Africa or Alaska? Hunting the lower 48? Hunting in backwater areas will have the disadvantage of limited access to ammo. As far as availability 300winmag beat both of the others anywhere in the world. After that the 300wby has more then the 300RUM because the RUM is so new. Hell the RUMs may be obsolete before to many years as far as factory loadings go. I have a 300wby, it sure is pretty but it never goes anywhere with me. It usually falls to the 338winmag or my 280rem depending. Black bear and pig get my 8-06 with a 200g slug.

I have a 300 Wby that I inherited from my dad, who died in 1980. He purchased it about 1958. The first barrel was a 24" slim taper, including scope it weighed 7 lb 15 oz. It was the first rifle that I experienced that you really had to hang-on to when you pulled the trigger. The second barrel was extended to 26" and kept a little more steel, so it weighs a pound or so more. I still get 3200 fps with 180 grain bullets, but I do so now with a little less pressure- in deference to that machined out FN action. IMO of the three: Win,Wby, Rum; I'd choose the Wby. If I was shooting .30 cal target and wanted a mag, I'd go with the .30/338. My 300 hardly ever gets hunted with any more, since I prefer the larger calibers for elk, and the smaller calibers for deer, etc; I guess it's a joker of all hunting, but master of none.

The only real advantage to the RUM is it is not belted![^]

I've heard all the blah blah blah about the RUM, but I can tell you it is MORE POWERFUL than the 300wthby will ever be. Now,..the reasoning behind such misinterpretation of balistics data is due to the fact that most folks don't take into account the RUM was made to push HEAVY bullets. The 180gr pill is a WASTE in the 300RUM as the powder capacity is far too great for pills that light. I am getting over 3200fps from 216gr pills with charges that have not maxed out yet. In factory 26" barreled 7mmrum's we have chronod well above the 7mm rem mag or 7mm wthby mag velocities from similar barrel lengths. That was with the HEAVY PILLS they were designed for. Fill the RUM's with slower powders and heavier bullets and they will far surpass the standard belted mags.

That being said,..if you don't NEED that much power,..it may be a bit too much for hunting game that doesn't require that much energy to take down. They do have a punch to them.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Point is, if you have a WBY you don't need to sell it and get a RUM.[:D]
I have been working up laods for my WBY and a friends new RUM with 200 gr A-Frames and there is only about 50 to 100 fps differance between the to, not enough to make any 'real' differance.

I have a solid 100fps on my pards 300wthby shooting 190gr pills from a 30" kreiger with my 300RUM running 216gr clinch river's from a 30" PacNor,..both 10twist. All rifles are different,..but these two BR rigs show me ahead by a length. Like I said,..all rifles and barrels perform differently and factory barrels can hardly be compared, especially to one another. The 300RUM for a "once in a while" elk hunt is too much gun IMHO. The 300win or wthby is more than enough.

Remington unfairly compared the Ultra to Weatherby when intro'd. It's case capacity is closer to that of a 30-378/33-378 which is still has a more efficient case.

They just did it again when they intro'd the new short cartridges 7 mm SA Ultra Mags by not using the same bullet.

By the way, Rem's out of the black powder rifle business!

If you really want the best of em' all, and like to burn lots of powder, get the Weatherby 30-378. Out performs the 300 Rummy, but they're both a waste for average hunting compared to the 300 Weatherby.

G&G,..doesn't the freebore actually bring the wtby closer to the RUM? I would think the MV comparison was accurate. I would like to see wthby freebore applied to the RUM calibers to see what max loads and long jumps would do for factory rifles, after all that is the basis for the wthby "flattest shooting hardest hitting" claim.

I would like to start an independant testing company that compares calibers correctly. This means same length throats, same twists, same length barrels, similar burn rate powders, etc. That would seperate reality from the tide of BS that any company marketing rep will no doubt blabber on with.
