6" 357 mag revolver
I'm looking for a 6" 357 mag revolver. I've narrowed it down to the Smith 686, or the Ruger GP100. I'm looking for experiences with either gun and your opinions. Which would be the easier gun to do work on to slick up the action ?

The 686 has a better trigger. The GP is the strongest. [8D]

If I were purchasing a combat pistol (law enforcement or military back-up) I would likely get the GP 100 as it is VERY strong. If this gun will be used for target, recreational or personal defense I would get the Smith. It is hard to beat the Smith trigger (although, believe it or not, the Manhurin with it's stolen design may have a BETTER trigger as they modified the design to use roller bearings for the trigger) and I love the feel of the guns, as well as the excellent accuracy right out of the box.
Tough decision, but if I were you I would go for the more refined pistol (Smith) unless you plan to do double duty with the gun as a bludgeon, in which case the GP is built like a tank (as is the trigger too).

I own the a 686...it was my first gun I ever bought. I've had it for 7 years now and still love it.

I was recently in your situation when looking for a 357, the smith just had an all around refined feel. But after a triggar job the triggers are much the same. For me personally the price was an issue, and the GP100 does fine for me. i ended up getting a slightly used stainless ruger for $300 less than the smith. 0 -
Never heard anything bad about a Smith. But, for me the price difference wasn't worth it. I bought the 6" stainless GP100 and have loved it.

I've had both and much preferred the 686. The Ruger was a lot rougher in it's action and trigger.
Even with the money difference I would buy the Smith.0 -
I have owned a 6" 686 for the past 13 years. Great firearm, I use mine mainly as a back up when hunting or when I am walking trough the woods or fishing in remote areas.
The S&W will have a better trigger out of the box.

I have had a 6" SS Ruger GP100 357mag for years. It's accurate. I have no complaints with the trigger and have used it to take an eight point buck. 0 -

Make Horace and Danny proud! Got the 686 myself and 3 others from the company. Plus the Rugers don't fit my hand well...something about their grips. Buy a S&W and you'll love it.
