shotgun rebluing services

Can any one advise of a reasonable rebluing service for a shotgun. It just needs a service grade job done to refinish to standard factory type bluing as found on Ithaca shotguns.

    I am having a gun reblued by a local gunsmith, cost approx. 65 taken down, 85 if he has to take it down and put it back together.

    I would think that would depend on if the gun has any value without blueing to begin with.

    After attending hundreds of gun auctions, I Can't tell much difference in prices (whether or not a gun is reblued or not). The old collectables have a waning interest and a lot of collector just want something pretty to hang over the fireplace. I see reblues getting exceptional prices and what we been taught is the desirable stuff bringing 50-60% of book.

    My 1st Shot was a bullseye on Gerber baby food lid at 20 ft using a Colt Woodsman. I was age 5. Been driving nails ever since. Thanks Dad, you were the best teacher I ever had.

    Not every gun being made is destined to be a "collectors" item. If that was the case nobody would be out there having fun with their guns. A beat up old gun is most likely just that, and an eyesore to boot. If you hve such a gun, the question most likely should be how much you want to spend to bring it to original factory like, or make it even better. A good blueing shop can very likely match close enougha gun to where it would be hard to tell the difference. The problem is the "manual" labor and skill neccessary not to screw-up an otherwise blemish free finish, by technicians that "lean" too hard on the polishing wheels, rounding up corners and waddling-out stamped/engraved numbers and letters, making it lees than a desirable gun for collectors purposes. Many so called "collectors" have been expertly "touched up" by competent technicians to maintain or duplicate the factory finish, if that is what you want.

    If your gun is a true collector, of large value, leave it alone. If the difference in depreciation is dwarfed by the guns condition, go for it.
