What in your opinion is the best longe range rifle for $1200 or less.

    Would a mauser action be a good platform to start builing a 1000 yard rifle? If so, where would I find more information on this? If not, which action should I start off with?

    Yes, that will work; but I'd suggest a Remington Mod. 700 action as being a little better. More rigid.

    I like the Mausers, but if your doing a serious 1K rifle from scratch I'd suggest you skip ALL the comericial actions, and go streight to one of the speciality receivers Hall, Nosika, BAT etc. (unless class rules eliminate such choices).

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    if in the future your thoughts go to resale the Mauser won't be worth what you put into it. 1st choice [for me anyway]is Rem 700 its the way to go, as mention by D-G
    2nd- older mod70 Win or a Sako action are more top picks

    I see youve cought the bug[:D] The first thing you need to do is check out this web site and read as much as you can stand www.benchrest.com
    check out the 1000yrd bench forum theres alot of info to be found there. I havent seen to many mausers being used as all out 1000 yarders but that doesnt mean there junk, a good custom action is gunna run anywhere from $750-$1600.Your best bet is to find somthing used to start with its alot cheaper.For a factory rig right out of the box you should look into a savage 12bvss-s they seam to own the factory class trophies right now.Ive seen groups of around 3 inches at 750 yrs. Not bad for outa the box huh [;)]

    [8D]www.sinclairintl.com has actions and rifles-But you BETTER find out what else it takes to shoot 1000yds and it almost has to be serious competition unless you want to spend 2k/3k for plinking![:(][:(][xx(][:D]

    makes a really good fiberglass stock,,,,and, of course,
    complete rifles.

    These forums are directed at the different disciplines of longer range competition and the equipment, techniques and preparation related to them. Some of the finest shooters in the world hang out there and contribute. You have to register to read and participate but that little effort is wothwhile considering the information that is available. Links are also provided for other resources as well.

    Don't forget that the equipment is only a small portion of the the whole process of accuracy at long range. Used equipment is usually available throughout the year and can be very reasonably priced in comparison to newly created gear.

    If you want to really do it start researching the limited production receivers like the Niska and the like. More to the point, what cartridge are you thinking about shooting. With something like the 6.5-284 you can use a short action reveiver, which supposedly is stronger and flexes less. These arguments don't mean much in normal hunting and target shooting circumstances, but in 1000yd may be valid. I'd be picking the reciever that would be best for the round that I wanted to shoot.

    the major caveat of the mauser action will be the controlled round feed design. This necessitates that the rounds be fed from the magazine in order for the extractor to correctly grab the rim. The magazine box will most often NOT allow a round to be seated out far enough to engage the rifling unless a short action caliber is built on a long action mauser, therefore the longer mag box will work. Triggers and stocks for this action are somewhat less extensive as for a rem700 or win70 action, so that affects your options. By far, the best non-custom actions are the rem700 and win70 which most any gunsmith will be more than competent with (assuming he has target rifle experience).

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
