Where dose it fall in the caliber line and what game would it be good for ? thanks to those who reply. [8]

    The 257 Roberts is the 7x57 case necked to 25 caliber. It is generally considered ideal for deer and antelope size game with some interest in using it for varmints. I wouldn't use it on Elk or Bear, but I find mine to work like lighting on whitetails. With the Ackley improved version you are crowding .26-06 velocities. It is truely a classic cartridge that is slowly dying.

    I find that I use the .25" cartridges for most of anything I'm going to be shooting at that weighs less than 200 pounds. Of the four variations that I have, I also find that the 257 Roberts is my favorite. There's some question regarding if it is because of the cartridge or because it's chambering is in a Model 70 made about 1938; be that as it may, I seem to be opting out of one-size-fits-all 270,30-06,300Mag cartridges and selecting a cartridge that I really like for the intended purpose. The 257 Roberts will never be dead as long as I have a rifle chambered for it, and brass is made that has a .473" rimless head and is at least 2 1/4" long.

    It is a step down from a 25-06 and a step up from 250 savage. My wife has one, my brother has 2 and all are very accurate and work awesome on Deer and Antelope. Truly a wonderful round light recoil like a .243 but shoots heavier bullets than .243 (120 grain is available)at similar speed. This round has often been loaded "lightly" presumably for the old stuff out there. Handloaded ammo or some +P ammo is available that steps out rather nice. Get one you won't be disappointed. Would be a fine Deer,Antelope and Black Bear gun, not to mention Coyotes and the like.

    The 257Roberts is/was often used to bring the ladies and kids into the shooting and hunting sports. It's light kick, while still having what it takes to bring down most of the game in the USA, makes it ideal for shooters of smaller stature or recoil tolerance. Older and wiser heads just plain admire it for itself.

    I shoot rifles from .22-7mag. My favorite is .257 Roberts, and I find myself grabbing one of the .257's for deer, pronghorn and javelina most of the time. I suspect there will long be a core of savy shooter who favor this fine cartridge and keep it alive. Mild recoil suits me fine and good accuracy as well. makes a great deer rifle out to about 250 yards, which is about as far as I want to shoot deer.

    I like the 25-06. Friend uses the 257 Roberts...both are great cartridges..mine has a bit more oomph, recoil difference is negligible.

    I use my 25-06 on primarily deer and coyotes..but have taken pronghorns and elk with it also. No problems, one shot. Like with any other caliber, bullet placement is key.
