    have your friend remove the grips and check the left side of the grip frame for a serial number and letter code. this should give us enough information to get started.

    there were several different bottom of the butt markings that included the june 1896 patent date but none that have fitchburg, mass, this was always marked on the barrel top strap.

    the correct name is 'Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works'

    I will have the sn tomorrow and yes, you are correct about the "Fitchburg, MA" being on the top strap. He was in error when he spoke to me earlier in the day. He is very appreciative of your help.
