MINI-14 GAS BLOCK

Hey, guys! I would like to know if anybody can tell me were a good starting point is for reducing the gas flow in the gas bushing? What size do I want the hole to be? THANKS!

    First, I have to ask, why would you want to do that?

    Secondly, the gas system on the Mini-14's is made, by the factory, to allow a certain amount of gas to operate the gun with most brands of .223 ammo.

    If you reduce the amount of gas getting throught the block you will experience malfunctions.

    Are you having problems with handloads? My experience has been that the mini-14's like faster burning powders such as H-335, and also tend to prefer bullets in the 50-60 grain arean. I have managed to make some of my 40 gr. loads work, but they have to be hot. The mini was really designed around M855 ball ammo (55 gr. FMJ-BT loaded to 3100 FPS with ball-type powder). Extruded powders, such as IMR 4198, tend to produce a pressure curve that is not mini-14 friendly. My advise would be to stick with factory ammo, such as UMC.

    There is a guy on that forum named Mike Knifong who sells reduced gas bushings in a set of three. Each gun is different and depending how well broken in, you can go to a smaller orifice. He also does excellent trigger work. I sent mine to him, he will send it back and tell you what the pulls were before and after his work. I highly recommend it.

    This product replaces the entire gas block. You can then adjust with an allen wrench the amount of gas you want to let pass. I will probably purchase this soon.




    For the others that did not understand why one would want to do this, here is my reply.

    The mini-14 with the factory gas bushing sends shells far far away. By reducing the bushing size, you can reduce recoil, keep the shells closer to you (reloading or just not pissing off your neighbor). If the gun was used by the army etc, I would never change the bushing cause it can cuase malfunctions. But for range use, definitely change it.

    I'm running the medium sized one of the 3 smaller hole diamter gas bushings mike knifong sells, never had one failure to extract (in maybe 2-3000 rounds since I've installed it) from the reduced gas bushing hole diamter (using mostly wolf ammo). And its significanly smaller probably 1/3 to 1/4 the factory orifice diameter.

    Thanks for the reply. I also heard this will help keep the bolt from slaming so hard aganist the back of the reciever, helping to give you a better group. I'm a Machinist by trade. I've already done the trigger job myself. From around 6.5 to 3lbs. I'm sure I could make the bushing myself. I just don't know how small the hole should be to start.[8D]
