Who ever refinished the stock didn't do you any favors. You now have a gun with a nice stock that is worth a hundred bucks less than if it had the original worn and scratched finish. Say-la-vee

Here we go ... What is the serial number on the gun first of all . There was a heated discussion on this last week. If its that early then $500-600 if refinished hurts a bit on value though. The collectors want everything original . Extra clip worth 50 dollars atleast.

The serial number is 6779. A retired gunsmith refinished the stock for me, included the checkering. I did not know that refinishing the stock would devalue the gun. He did a nice job, it does look new or well taken care of.

I have a Winchester 88 in .308. I have the original box, all the paperwork, and the gun hasn't had 150 rounds put through it. When I bought it, I paid $600 for it. I had another one in .308 that I bought in a pawn shop down in Louisianna when I was stationed at Fort Polk. I paid $175 for it. It was in rough shape, so I had it professionally reblued and I redid the stock in a handrubbed oil finish of pure boiled linseed oil. It looked really awesome. The guy who wanted it worse than I did wasn't real impressed though, but he still give me $500 for it. I have seen a couple on Cabela's Gun Library in .284, and they were asking $1500 for each, and they got sold.

Thanks for the info, apparently it is worth more to me to keep as a back up to my bolt action 308. I thought because of the early serial # and the overall condition of the rifle, it would be worth more...[?].

I would think being your dad's gun would make it worth quite a lot. And that business about only needing one gun? You got a lot to learn! Stick around here and we will show you the error of your thinking. It is not about need it is about want.[^]

You cannot compare the price that a .284 brings compared to a .308.The .284 is a rare caliber compared to the .308.A.358 will bring even more. [:)]
