Polish the forcing cone or not.

I have a 870 super mag and have been told that if I lengthen the forcing cone and then polish it, I will get a better pattern. My question is, is it worth spending $50 just to get a little tighter pattern for turkey hunting? I understand also that the forcing cone may already be extended beacause the gun will shoot a 3 1/2" shell. So all I may need is a polish. And again is it worth it?

    One of those topics on which opinons are divided. Likely you would get pattens a bit more consistent. Probably not dramatic difference, but some. If I were having other work done, I would probably do it, otherwise not unless you have significant problems. I had screw in chokes added to an o/u from the '60's. While that was being done, I had Briley lengthen and polish the forcing cone. Gun patterns beautifully, but to be honest it had never be shot, so I don't know how it would have patterned with the original configuration. Certainly the guys who do the work encouage it. Personally I would not bother to polish the cone if I did not lengthen it. The point of lengthening the cone is to step down the diameter more gradually thus causing less pellet deformation. That should improve the pattern. Most decent guns pattern pretty well without it.

    no bearing on the need you want , but i had that done to my old Richland over'n'under, results were great, i win free turkeys every shoot i go to hard to, hard to beat me....yes the patern gets better[:)]

    I shoot a 3 1/2" 12 ga. out of the box with Hvy shot And the patterns are great @ 45 yds. Save your $ and buy Hvy. Shot. All my turkeys killed with 1 shot 35-45 yds. 3 1/2 mag & Hvy Shot deadly on them. Good Luck, Stay Safe.............................

    Holy tripple post batman.

    I Just bought a Remington 870 Super Mag last thursday in 20 gauge I am going to lengthen and polish the forcing cone on it hopefully some time this coming week if we got the polishing setup in.

    I am doing it for class credit so it isnt costing me anything, I plan to pattern it before and after as well I will put up some pics of the paterns once I do should be intresting to see.

    Btw no one mentioned it also reduces recoil...

    ive been designing shotgun bbls for a living for some time now and i feel qualified to say that whoever told you that forcing cones effect pattern is smoking whacky tobaccy. choke effects pattern, modifying forcing cones effects felt recoil. the cone makes a gas tight fit for the shell contents to pass from hull to bore. the speed in which the wad and shot pass thru the choke can be effected by pressure. (hot load or soft load.) polishing or lengthining forcing cones does not change the pressure, it just makes the pressure more uniform down the bore. so instead of a crack! its more like a whuuummmmf! the pressure doesnt change, the transition is longer, thus less kick. thats it.[;)]

    bobski i don't 'bout no "smoking whacky tobaccy" but i had my chamber lengthened [opened], forcing cone special polished rite down to the choke on just my upper barrel [f] an out of the same box of ammo on paper proved a great difference, thats my gun, my story, no fire intended. the pattern was tighter an no flyers or deformed lead according to the holes.......

    confused....but learning
