SOG P-38/P-1's
I hit the wrong key and posted this on the general discussion forum by mistake. SOG wrote that they have these pistols, vintage 1960 to 1990. When they learned I have no FFL, they won't write back. Does anyone have any idea who made or may have made these pistols? Are they reliable? And what would you pay?

Their ex West German Army pistols been imported for years, since the krouts went with the H & K. Walther made them in what was then West Germany, circa late 50's - late 80's. Most common are the ones marked P 1. Use caution as their ( 2 ) versions of the P 1. The later version has a reinforced frame with a hex steel bolt, just above the trigger. At one time they sold for a little over $200, noticed recently that the prices have increased. Your going to have to go through a FFL Dealer to purchase one.

For rufe-snow: Thanks for the information. The picture that SOG had looked more "square" and less like a Luger. Could these be the same pistol or is there a difference? What is wrong with the first gun you mentioned? Not strong enough? I have a friend who has his own bait and tackle shop and can me one for less than $300. Like you said, they have gone up. It was kind of abrupt how SOG, the moment I said I didn't have an FFL won't even answer my e-mail. I simply asked where they were made.I appreciate you taking the time to answer. The picture of the Luger Pistol in my response to your original questions, is my Luger, I use it as my signature.
The late model P 1 that you should buy ( stronger, more durable ) has a steel hex bolt through the frame, just above the trigger. It's quite noticeable. In any side view picture of the P 1's it's easy to tell the difference between the first and second version because this reinforcement bolt stands out like a sore thumb.0 -
About three months ago I had my local gunshop order me one from SOG, classified as 'excellent' on the box. It appears to have been overhauled or re-manufactured. The only original parts are the frame and the grips. All else is Walther factory new. I have put about 50 rounds thru it with no problem. 0 -
I'm not surprised that SOG failed to respond to your questions. Once they learned that you were not a potential customer, any further correspondence is a waste of their time. To you it's a fun hobby, but to them it's just a business. And, time is money.
Most of us are not going to shoot a P1 enough to ever have a problem with the "old" model without the steel reinforcement. It would take many full-power rounds to cause wear on the all-aluminum version. With it's rudimentary sights & long, spongy trigger pull, this is not a target gun. You will only use it for defense or occasionaly plinking.
In the $200-250 range, it's a great buy. But, as the price approaches $300, it starts to loose its appeal. Especially since I can't use my C&R for it, & I would have to figure in paying a dealer to handle it. In the $300 price range, a S&W 9mm police trade in starts to look like a much better value.

Note that you usually get a cleaning kit, holster, and two mags. The holsters are usually a bit tatty.
The problem I have had with mine is that the extractor is on the top left, so the brass often come at my face. You will need to test different ammo; of teh "good stuff", Remmington Golden Sabres work well in my gun.
Just don't run +p through it if it doesn't have the reinforcing block.0 -
I thought those P-1's were C&R?!?! Did they only have a certain number of them that were made in the specified time frame for C&R eligiblity, or is the rememberer on the fritz again?

All the P-1s I have seen have not been C&R guns, although there may be some that are. Mostly though an FFL is required to obtain the P-1. I would guess from what Rufe-Snow was saying that the P-1s were not being produced until least 1956 (the 50 year criteria for a C&R).
From time to time SOG will offer original P-38 with all the Nazi markings. They have some now. These do sell as C&R since they are over 50 years old.

For rhmc24: Thanks. That is important information. When SOG thought I was a dealer/FFL owner, they were quite helpful. When they told me I was not on their "list" and I said I had no FFL, they clammed up. They don't respond to my e-mails at all now. I was only trying to get a ball park on the price because their website doesn't even list these pistols. I have a friend who has a small bait, tackle, and gun shop. I order through him. What did you have to replace on the pistol? 0 -
For nmyers: I understand what you are saying. I have been a customer of their's in the past and plan to be one now. I told them that. My guess was that they didn't want a customer to have any idea what the wholesale price was because various retailers are obviously going to charge different prices. For me its more a relic type thing. Not for target or self defense. But, you raise an important point about its function and use. I was planning on buying a Smith anyway so I may pass on this deal (its $270 dollars). Thanks for your post as it was a real help in my decision. 0
