I have a hardwood 10/22 stock that I want cut just behind the pistol grip, shaped, and refinished. I don't wnat to try this myself. Do you guys have any suggestions?

If you cut the stock off of a 10/22 just behind the pistol grip, and intend to leave the rest as is, or if you cut the barrel down also, my suggestion is to have a friend ready to bring you smokes to the big house with the bars on the windows.
EITHER WAY THIS IS TOTALLY ILLEGAL TO DO TO A RIFLE.

There are manufacturers that have a folding stock you can buy for the 10/22.

Well I should have offered more info. Although I'm sure my friends on GB would have taken good care of my collection while was in the big house!
I am building a 10/22 type pistol from a 80% receiver - perfectly legal although there are restrictions.
Anyway the donor parts gun has a nice hardwood stock and I don't want to screw up the job.

cbxjeff, if the stock is so nice, get a different stock. They go for $10-$15 on Ebay. Sometimes you can get a barrel with it. Check it out. Why Butcher up a nice stock. 0 -
Yes bruce, I see a used checkered 10/22 stock currently at $36.00 on E-Bay. I'm not sure just what you are mean. We are talking about a factory stock here. I could buy this stock for $36.00+ (12 hours left) plus shipping and use it then sell my new stock for what $56.00? Why would I do that? The whole point of the post was that I don't want to "butcher" a stock. That's why I am looking for a pro.

Ok, you guys won me over. Wheeler, I didn't understand what you were getting at - cheap donor stocks for practice. Maybe I can do this after all. I'm watching about 12 stocks on GB & EBay. I'll buy a couple in a few days for practice. If the final project works out I'll let you guys know and attach a picture. If it doesn't you guys will REALLY hear from me!

Exactly what are the restrictions for making a 10/22 pistol?? I added some material to mine to make it more sutable at the bench,adding to the front of the grip and to the cheek rest.What kind of finish do you intend to use?? Keep use posted[^]

Finishing a 80% receiver or purchasing a new (never assembled into a weapon) receiver is the key. If you get a new receiver then you have no restrictions other than following the laws for any other pistol's features. Finishing a 80% receiver gets you a piece that has no s/n or background. You can't, however, sell it. That would make you a mfgr. My son can inherit it though. Ruger won't sell bare receivers unlike say Bushmaster. So I have no choice but to finish one.
Haven't thought much about the finish yet. That's a ways off.
