32 New Police

Just had a consignment of a Colt revolver in 32 New Police calibur. Is this ammo still made and available? Owner says he shoots 32/20 ammo in it. Hope an expert can teach me something here. Thanks. Fred

    Hello the 32 short and long colt are both a straight walled case with rim of .374 and base of .318 the 32/20 is a taper case with rim of.408 and base of.3535 the OFFICIAL POLICE was chambered in 32/20 and others the NEW POLICE was in 32 colt either your pistol is a official police or a new police that has been rechambered but I don't think the CYL. on a new police is long enough to take a 32/20 because the cartridge case is 1.315 inches long.with the bullet making the oal more then 1.6 inches.

    The .32 Colt New Police is the same cartridge as the .32 Smith & Wesson Long, with a .337" base diameter but with a slightly different bullet. They are interchangeable.
    The short and long Colts will fire, but bulge or sometimes split in the fatter chamber of the S&W/New Police. The same condition exists in the .38's.

    Ross is 100% correct. Colt chambered this revolver for the 32 S&W but did not want Smith & Wessons name anywhere on their gun so they gave it new name.
