Browning Pump Rifles?

Why did Browning stop manufacturing their pump centerfire rifles? I have heard different stories ranging from LOW sales, to Reliability problems. Is there someone out there that knows the true reason?
I was thinking of looking for one, chambered in 243, for my grandson, but I don't want to by something that will give him trouble.
