    You have two or more choices.
    #1 call Winchester or send them an e-mail. [^]
    #2 Take all the dates you have and put them in a hat,shake them up and pick one.[:D]
    #3 Just figure that it was made after 1955 which (I think) is the first year of production.[:)]

    Hi All
    When it comes to confirming model 88's , it seems like all of you must been living in a cave somewhere. This is Titled "ASK THE EXPERTS"
    LOL.....First of all there was never a serial number 1.
    1955 = 004 - 35999
    1956 = 35999 - 79999
    1957 = 79999 - 82999
    1958 = 82999 - 85035
    1959 = 85035 - 106397
    1960 = 106397 - 116517
    1961 = 116517 - 132356
    1962 = 132356 - 142917
    1963 = 142917 - 1511693
    The easiest thing in the world to do if you think you may have a 1955 or 1956 is to look at the tang. If you have a cloverleaf or "three bumped" tang , you have a 1955 or 1956. This is what is called a pre '57 to the collector. Both of these will have a serial number less than 79999. Have been collecting 88's since 1989 and have all the pre'57's and pre and post '64's that were made.
    The best reference I have found on the 88 ,you got to go to the book that was made for one gun "THE EIGHTY-EIGHT. by Douglas Murray. All figures in this book were verified by WINCHESTER-WESTERN. So to all you experts "This is a 1956"

    Hi ATF
    I didn't mean to be a smart ass and sorry if I hurt your feelings. I just wanted to let the man know what year of gun the man had. You said 1958 or 1957 OR 1955 0r 56 0r 57 0r 58.
    If you don't know, you shouldn't reply.

    LOL.....First of all there was never a serial number 1. Wrong answer Robert[:(]! According to Herbert Houze, serial number 1 went to the Winchester Museum (now held by the Cody Firearms Museum). Serial number 4 was simply the FIRST Model 88 shipped from the factory warehouse.

    1955 = 004 - 35999
    1956 = 35999 - 79999
    1957 = 79999 - 82999
    1958 = 82999 - 85035
    1959 = 85035 - 106397
    1960 = 106397 - 116517
    1961 = 116517 - 132356
    1962 = 132356 - 142917
    1963 = 142917 - 1511693

    Don't you think that Mr. Murray's serial number ranges for the first four years are just a bit too "convienent"... much like Mr. Madis' serial number listing? Do you really believe that Winchester mangaged to begin 1956 with serial number 36,000, 1957 with 80,000, and 1958 with 83,000[?] I think NOT.

    Also, after having allegedly produced 36,000 Model 88s in just seven months (May 1955 - December 1955), then an additional 44,000 in 1956, how does Mr. Murray (or you) explain the relatively tiny production figures in 1957 (just 3,000 guns), and 1958 (just 2,035 guns)[?] My personal take on this, is that Mr. Murray is guilty of the same style of writing that Mr. Madis so often engaged in... making false assumptions.

    Finally, according to Mr. Houze (who worked for Winchester), the original production records for years 1955 - 1960 were lost long ago, so "Winchester-Western" (which is also an error, as Winchester never used that as the Company name) could NOT have verified any serial number listing for those years.

    My last comment to you, is that you did indeed come across like a smart A*S*S*, and I find myself in total agreement with ATF's assesement of your character. This is just a friendly piece of advice from me to you... In the future, I would suggest conducting more research before spouting off with what you "think" you know, and NEVER rely on a single written source of information.
