Browning BAR 243
Excuse my ignorance please. I acquired this rifle from my father's estate. I know it's at least 30 years old. It probably hasn't been fired in that long. It's in decent shape but could use a good cleaning (of which I'm not sure I'm qualified). How can I go about finding it's history and value? I have all the markings/numbers. It was made in Belgium and has a Bausch & Lomb scope. Thx in advance for any guidance.

I found this Browning BAR Safari 243 with BOSS made in Belgium. The guy is asking $750. He says it's worth $1200. The gun is in like new condition. It's absolutely beautiful. I'd rate it 99.9 Any info as to what they are worth would be helpful. I am thinking of buying it for my son for his first deer rifle. Thanks Jeff 0 -

He's not asking a bad price for it, but his $1200 figure is a load of crap. The price is fair. You can't make any money on it, but it's fine if you're going to keep it. 0 -

That one at auction is not a Safari II, and the starting price is a tad high.
Seems to me it's not an auction where the opening bid is 15% higher than retail.
The Safari II in .338 mag with BOSS was at $935 in a couple stores 3 years ago. The mag calibers were about 10% higher than the others.
I wouldn't think you'd need a BOSS on a .243.
My .338 BAR Safari II with the BOSS removed shoots like a 9 pound .308.
If you buy him the BAR I bet he'll keep it forever.
