Front sight question

How is the front sight base on a ruger super redhawk held onto the barrel? I know how the sight is held in the base, but not the base onto the barrell, I cannot see any screws or pins.

    If it's not permanent it has probably been soldered on.

    I see no evidence of solder, but I could be wrong, I have seen guns with the front sight moved, but do not know how they do it. I was considering cutting the barrell down a couple inches.

    Hello yekimak...

    If you look at the front face of the sight ramp you will see an indented spring loaded pin... simply push it in, and lift up on the sight.

    For all the bother of cutting it back, recrowning, and resetting the sight have you thought of having Ruger replace it with a shorter one if they will do that.
    (I kinda remember someone saying they will not change something from what it was) Just a thought is all...
    At least it might be worth a call to them, and they can tell you how the base is put on the barrel while your at it. If I had one in hand I could tell you right off.

    I am a bit of a shadetree gunsmith and do most all of my work myself, usually without a hitch, so cost is not really an issue. But this front sight base looks like it is held on by sheer will lone, no pins, solder, or screws that I can see, but it does not appear to be integral either.

    Hi,

    I'll cast my vote with Bert. My Redhawk manual says: 'It is provided with an insert front sight. To change the front sight, depress the spring-loaded plunger in the front of the barrel rib with a small punch'. You can get different inserts for it.

    I know how to replace the blade, it is the front sight base on the super redhawk's barrel that I am trying to figger out, but thanks for the info.

    He wants to cut the barrel so just removing the blade is no good,he needs to remove the base as well and I think he'll find it's sweat-ed on (Silvered Soldered) [:)]

    Aahhh... I thought you were trying to remove the sight itself versus the base. As far as I know, the sight base is an integral part of the investment cast barrel i.e., it isn't going to come off the barrel without grinding or cutting it. I totally agree with MrBruce... if you want a shorter barrel, order one from Ruger and install it yourself, or simply send it in to Ruger and ask them to fit up a shorter barrel.
