? cleaning B/P cartridges ?
Took my .45 Cimarron model P (original finish, love it) shooting today. Thought I would try some Pyrodex pellets.
Loads worked fine.
Got home tossed the shells in the tumbler and cleaned the gun.
Four hours later the shells still look like crud.
How do I get them clean ?
Or do I just leave them like that to go with the "original finish"

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. I tried everything, and NOTHING worked. I cringe everytime I reload them.

I use simple green to clean my muzzle loader, really takes the powder residue right out of the barrel. I don't know why it wouldn't work on the cartridges also. 0 -
Hot, soapy water and a brush. Let dry, and then tumble them. 0 -
boil them in water and dish soap, rinse/dry and then tumble them. 0 -
Use smokeless techniques to clean Pyrodex. It has no chemical similarity to black powder, and is more tenacious than black or smokeless powders, and is more prone to after rust.
Its major advantage is that it is not usually necessary to clean during the day of shooting.

I saw on a BP cartridge forum where a guy soaked them in vinegar and water first, then rinsed and dried and tumbled

NO NO to the vinegar, guys. Over time, even mild acids will erode the brass.

Thanks for the tips.
Looks like next I'll scrub with hot soapy simple green water as soon as I get home.
I think it's to late for these on the outside.0 -
SOME OF THE B.P. SHOOTERS UP HERE TAKE A MILK JUG 1/2 FULL OF WATER/SOAP TO THE RAGE WITH THEM AND JUST DROP THE BRASS IN AS THEY FIRE IT. IT'S CLEAN BY THE TIME THEY GET HOME, JUST RINSE AND THEN INTO THE TUMBLER/VIBRATOR. 0
