1896 KRAG CARBINE (ROUGH RIDER)
I have come into possession of a 1896 krag carbine serial # 7---6
that was issued to CO G 1 ST U.S. VOLUNTEER CAVALRY (ROOSEVELTS
ROUGH RIDERS)on june 23 1898.I need to know 2 things 1 appx. value?
and 2 did it see service in cuba?
The gun was issued to ALFRED J CONOVER of LIBERTY NEW MEXICO
TERITORY.He was a 5-41/2 in 27 yr old cowboy.His record does
not indicate any absences during the regiments service so it can
be assumed he was present during the cuban campaign.Troop G was
heavily involved in the cuban campaign.HE was also issued
issued SIX SHOOTER (COLT S.A.A. REV SERIAL3927)
SPRINGFIELD RESEARCH SERVICE has provided me with 7 differnt
papers which have been helpfull but do not answer the
question about whether the gun and trooper had been in cuba
HE was mustered out in WICKOFF (LONG ISLAND)sept 15 along with
the rest of the regiment and his mustering out payment was
10.22 his residence was listed as chicasee ok.
The gun is in good condition except for one thing,I believe the
stock is original but someone had to sand on it,there is one thin
left on it.The balance is good and original.There is dull bluing
on the barrel a C on the sight,chamber and bore are excellent,
The action is very smooth and shoots very nice(could not resist)
shot 5 times.I do not know if i will sell or keep this gun but
would like to know an app. value THANK YOU

I have some reading and research to do but with the kind of provenance you report, I think you have a valuable carbine there. The 1896's are a bit less numerous than some other variants, and the timeframe sounds correct. Any provenance you add is going to start putting an x2 behind the book value. I assume you mean the cartouch is faint. What does it read and is there a firing proof on the underside of the stock?

Thank you very much for the help on the rough rider carbine.The
cartouche on the left side is to faint for me to read,and the
symbol behind the trigger guard has been sanded out,there are
a couple of pretty good gouges in the stock,everything else is
in good shape.I have found a P with an A under it on the bottom
of the barrel by the chamber.THANK YOU

You are right about the (SPRINGFIELD RESEARCH SERVICE) webb sight.
I typed in the serial # of my 1896 krag carbine and found out it
was issued to the 1st u.s. vol.cav.(rough riders) and the name of
the trooper it was issued to and for a price furnished me with
some valuable papers,a good service.ART
