atv's
hey...i was wondering if any of you guys use atvs for hunting...im looking to get one for both hunting and plowing...especially after this storm here in new england...i was looking at the yamaha grizzly 660 or the suzuki vinson quadrunner 500...any suggestions?

No matter what one you get if you get it set up for plowing snow you will wonder how you got by before without one. I own a Suzuki Kingquad 300 it has all the power I need for plowing snow and pulling my little trailer full of firewood.

I truely love my 98 400 Kodiak and all it can do, from hunting, hauling fire wood, and dragging big deer back to the barn. I have a plow with it but never got around to putting it on thanks to a 4000 Ford 50HP Deisel with a back-blade on it.
I would not part with the Yamaha, unless it was for a newer one that I don't need [:)]

My recommendation is for the Grizzly. If you want the biggest, baddest ATV, this is it. The Kodiak is another good choice. Just smaller, but capable too. Both have been bullet-proof units. I have been at a Hon-Yam-Suz dealer for some time. And one of those would be my choice.
If you get a plow, get the Cycle Country version. It's the best design going.0 -
Check out the new Honda models. I ride with about 20 - 30 people in Greenville, KY. We will ride 20 -25 miles in a day, including some mud holes 95% are Honda owners and mostly the Foreman or Rincon. I bought a Kawasaki Prairie and have had several problems. My neighbors both ride Polaris 500 and 700 bikes and break something almost every time out.... Don't buy a Polaris...
As far as hunting, it will let you scout your propery in a third of the time and end breaking your back dragging out a deer.0 -
I know of no other product so overpriced as 4wheelers, a new one cost between $4,000 and $8,000 yet for the same price you could get a a used 4x4 truck or used jeep, although ATV's are funner. 0 -
Just remember these ATV's aren't for "hunting" they are for getting you to and from a spot to start hunting from and getting your buck out, all too often people run these things all over the hills "hunting" on them and they are simply pushing the game further back in the bush. I get really pissed when I've hiked in and am watching a spot till dark and in comes some yahoo on a ATV right in the middle of my spot like Deer and Elk don't have ears to hear these damn things. 0 -

I have always owned Hondas in 01 I bought a new Honda Rancher and I love it! It has all the power I need, I use it for hunting and I use the heck out of around the house. I can't compare it to the others because I haven't owned them, but if I were to buy another one I really like the bigger Hondas they have recently came out with!![:D] 0 -
We use ATV's for hunting, working, and just having a good time. I can not say enough good about the Polaris 700 twin! We use them hard and have not had any trouble with any of the three. The only drawback is the weight, which it more than makes up for in power.
As for plowing with them I just did my friend's farm with one and it worked great! Even better than I would have thought for such a large area.
I don't understand all the bad press the Sportsman gets. Over all great machine.0 -
I bought an atv not that long ago and prior to doing so i test rode every "big bore" atv made at the time being late 2003. I rode the polairs 700 griz 660 honda rincon 650 and the kawasaki praire 650. What i was looking for was a good all around atv for pretty much the same reasons you are. What i found from reading and rideing was that the polairs had good power but weak drivetrain (cv shafts) also noted was great ground clearance. The next was the honda rincon it had a great ride but really lacked on power and had no locking front diff or low range 4x4. Then came the grizz 660 this was an impressive machine and i almost bought it there was nothing to complain about. Lastley was the praire 650 which i did buy none of them had more power or offered better control and so far i have been very happy and have pushed alot of snow with no problems. This is of course all my opinion and you are welcome to draw your own. I strongly advise the extended protection plan no matter what you buy. 0 -

I know a gentleman in Missouri that has an atv repair shop,before buying my atv I talked to him about what he worked on the most/least. He said he fixes more polaris atv's than all other combined and in no particular order honda,suzuki, or arctic cat the least. I own a 2000 arctic cat 400 4x4 that I'm very happy with and have had absolutely no problems with it at all. I am considering a honda rincon for my next I love me gift. 0 -
I own a Polaris. So do three of my friends. Mostly 400 two-strokes. It is a maintenance heavy machine.
Friends generally find a way to break something on theirs a couple times a year. I have been lucky. Except... I left water in the transmission during some extended storage and a chain between the high and low output shafts stiffened. Replacement was $48 and a lot of work on my part.
Polaris is not a machine you can ride hard every day and do maintenance one or twice a year.
