Need Ear Protection for a Family of 5

To my surprise and amazement, my wife has NOT shot down my idea of introducing our 3 young kids to guns and shooting, provided we shoot at paper targets at a safe, outdoor site. What's more, she even indicated that she'd be willing to try her hand at shooting a 22 caliber target rifle.

I've narrowed down my gun choices to either a youth-sized Rossi matched pair (22 + .410) or a youth-sized Savage single shot 22.

But I'm having a MUCH harder time figuring out what kind of ear protection to buy, especially since I can't break the bank buying electronic suppressors as I need to buy 5 pairs of ear muffs.

Are there any kids models available? What kind of minimum DB rating should I look for (85 DB?)? My kids are 6, 7, and 9 years old. And what about me and my wife? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Don't cheat in the ear protection deparment. get good stuff it last a long long time if you take car of it. I use Peltor 6S electronic. Works excellent.

    Cost 5-6$ and can find them at any welding shop or tool supplier maybe even Wal Mart I've used them for years they can hang on your neck so you dont loose them will talking ect. ect. when finished they hang on my rear view mirror very handy also the red plugs come off on the grey pair the yellow is my favorite the grey pair is actually advertised for shooting

    Load on Sunday shoot all week!!!

    once they grow out of those, I just use the cheap silencios at walmart for $8..

    might not be a bad idea to double up with plugs and muffs, if you want a few pairs of plugs email me your address ill send you some. ( pak190@psu.edu )

    I would not be very concerned about it as long as you intend to shoot 22s.However when you start on bigger stuff,then by all means get protection.On the other hand,you might see that some in your brood will not like "shooting" and tell you they no longer are interested as my children did.Out of three,I had one who choose to remain with the old man.Still shoots thirty years later.To us it is great entertainment to others a real boring past time.To each his own.Good luck.Am touched by your concern. Too many guys think only of themselves.Leave the kids to fend for themselves.Great DAD.

    Even the lowly 22 rim fires can and will cause ear damage unless you use ear protection. Double up on plugs and muffs to be safe.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

    I was at the local site yesterday with my youngest son (6 years old), and it's pretty apparent that we're going to need some serious ear protection. When we arrived, there were three old timers firing a variety of WWI-era 30-40 Krag's, WWII M-1 carbines, and a fire-breathing muzzle loader. Every other shot sounded like an elephant gun going off!

    Suppressing the report from our 22 target shooter is the least of my conerns (by the way, I've changed my mind and have decided to go with a CZ 452 Scout for the kids). I think I need to use a combo of plugs and muffs.

    Overdoing it is indeed better, even for .22's. You don't want yourself or your kids ending up with permanant ear-ringing (tinatus) like some of us that did not know better in the 50's and 60's!

    Even for just 22's, practice makes perfect.. if they get in the habit, theyll always wear it.

    I'll give the 10th or 11th vote for buying decent hearing protection for the kids, and always setting the example of using it. My dad, granddad, and uncles never wore hearing protection around the farm, so neither did I. Now we all have matching hearing loss to go along with our matching bad habits.

    Last time my hearing was checked, the doctor told me that I had grown up running a tractor or a backhoe without a cab, based on the tones I couldn't pick out. I don't have the results, and didn't ask too many questions, but he was right.

    I picked up a pair of Remington muffs on sale at Dick's that I'm really happy with. I think they were $20 each. You might try a Harbor Freight catalog as well. Use ear plugs along with the muffs, and they should be well-protected.
