pre 64 or not

A pre-64 Model 70 will have a serial number that is onlyh a number, no letter prefix, and the number will be less than 600,000 (actually about 580,000 but I forget the change). The most recognizable difference is the extractor- the pre-64 is non-rotating, added on to the bolt as a separate piece, like is now sold as the "classic" models. The post 64 extractor is like the Remington 700/Savage 110, built into the bolt face and turn with the bolt as it turns. Also the ejector is a spring plunger in the bolt face (on the post 64), on the pre-64 it's a fixed blade set in the receiver about the bridge, and as the bolt is pulled to the rear it slides up into the slot in the bolt, to hit the cartridge face, pushing it out of contact. This should be enough for you to determine if it's pre or post 64.

The early one is called the control feed and the later one is a SLAM FEED.Most big game hunters shoot control feed rifles for safety. They can only be reloaded if the original cartridge case is completely out of the action. In the slam feed there is a chance that you could get two rounds in the action at once causing you to clear before the next shot.In hunting dangerous game you probably won't get the shot off in time.Another valid reason for double barreled rifles.

He tells me that the serial number # is G1143637. Does this sound correct or is he looking at the wrong number.

If their is a G in the serial number on the receiver it is NOT a Pre 64.
