one should not choose cheap when in defense of there life. That being said I would look at the CZ or Tanfoglio line of 9mm, 40 s&w, 45acp or the 10mm. My 2 cents. [8D]

what ever you chose make it a 9mm , I have never seen ammo so cheap you couldnt reload for what there selling 9mm for I got 50 rds Remington $5 a box , 100 rnds white box $10 , S&B at the gun show for $4 box ...........now 32 auto is anywhere from $12 - $24 , 380 $8 - $14 , 45 & 38 special is comming down , but 9mm is the way to go , the market is flooded with Glocks & lots of other for $300- $400 I'm talking nice pistols , not junk , my buddy bought a S&W CS9 , its a small 20oz 8shot auto , WOW what a beauty ! small , right on the money out of the box , we shot about 600 rounds the day after he bought it not even a burb , funny they have been out for a years & you dont see any posts on them , its a shame , Ive shot Kahrs & some other cut down 1911's , not even close , I may get one myself , the S&W CS series is best kept secret around , I'd like to try the CS45 as I'm no fan on the 40 round ..............Billy

hey D how you doing , my little shack got busted up with all that bad weather we had , my neighbors had damage also , so we have been rebuilding the places , just got to do some shooting after a long rest from the range , I have two neighbors living with me till we get there place shaped up, maybe two more weeks , if you get to try the CS45 let me know how it is , I cant say enough good stuff about that CS9 pistol or maybe I just miss going to do some shooting , well got to get up early , take care .....................Billy

A good bargain would be a CZ 75. They're reliable, easy to maintain, solidly-built, and relatively cheap for the quality you get.
For self defense, though, I would suggest getting something larger than a 9mm. If it's purely for home defense, get yourself a 12-gauge pump action shotgun. A Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 would be perfect because nothing says you mean business more than a racking shotgun slide.
If you intend it for conceal and carry as well as home defense, get your self a 40 S&W (once again, CZ makes some fine handguns at a good price) or perhaps a revolver. Revolvers are, once again, easy to maintain, darn near idiot proof, and typically more accurate. A revolver n .38 Special and/or .357 Magnum would do nicely.0 -

First of all, I am not trying to start any kind of verbal sparring with you. I just wanted to know what substantiated evidence have you found that states that a revolver is "typically more accurate" in the handgun category. I've often wondered this myself. I own both revolvers and semi-auto handguns. Although because of my physical handicap I don't shoot my semi-auto guns. With only the use of one hand I find it damn near impossible to safely rack the slide on my semi guns. Therefore, I just collect them and only shoot my revolvers and I do enjoy the wheel guns.
I was just wondering if you had found an article which states what you had mentioned in your posting.0 -

if personel defense is your goal, you still cant beat the .45 caliber autopistol. To many good factory, and customs to say which one to choose from , but you said cheap, so find yourself a new firestorm,1911 compact. I bought one for 250.00 for a friend of mine,
and he shoots the crap out of it. Shoot it as is, and dont mess w/ it, even a set of night sights are to expensive for this gun. everything colt will fit except the grips, But this gun will serve you better in a life or death situation, than any of the small caliber guns mentioned above reponse.0 -

I made that comment about revolvers because (a) there are fewer moving parts to cause recoil or jarring and (b) most wheelgunners I know can outshoot me any day of the week.[;)]
Revolvers also have a fixed barrel which, arguably, leads to greater accuracy.
But I have read no definitive studies proving or disproving the revolvers-over-semis accuracy debate - just personal observation and limited personal gun knowledge.[:D]0 -
The question was personel defence gun monkey boy, but at least your honest about your firearms experience. which makes me wonder why you felt like giving advise about personel defense weapon choices.
Accuracy is very seldom or ever a factor in persol defence situations. Most confrontations take place within 10 feet. It's gonna be real hard to explain "In fear for your life" if he's farther than 25' in any state. Besides the old .45 still has more documented 1 shot stops than any other caliber, and its not because there's more of them out ther either. Its because they hit like a hammer.

Your statement about jamming is the exact reason I will not carry one of my semi-auto guns. Can you imagine me, with the handicap I listed in my previous response, trying to clear a jam when I can barely rack the slide. About the only way I can do it one handed is to catch the rear sight on something and rack it this way. Not a real safe way in my opinion.
BTW, brecht, did not mean to hijack your thread here. I like the 357 magnum response for self defense. Then again, I have a 44 magnum, 2" barreled Dan Wesson revolver that is a real beast. I haven't shot it because I am afraid it might be a bit much for me to hold with only one hand. I definitely would consider something larger than 9mm.0 -

If you like semis but are afraid of clearing a jam one handed, buy an original colt 1911 style that doesn't have an extended slide rod, that way you can pinch cock it. You can do this with any colt style (except Defender or commander size) the slide is too short to cycle rounds. You can also do this with a Browning Hi power and older Star models (except Pd) again because of slide length. Its not dangerous and I suspect that John Browing himself figured in a combat situation, especially a wounded GI that this could be a life saver. Try it and let me know what you think.0 -

I apologize for my lack of knowledge, but I am not familiar with the term "pinch cock." I have a Colt Sistema and five other Ballester guns. One of the Ballester is a 22lr trainer. Maybe after you fill me in on the "pinch cock" method I could practice with this gun first as the slide is much easier to move to the rear compared to the 45's. Then I could work my way up to the 45's. Sure would be nice to be able to rack these guns safely. Don't forget: I won't try any method that requires my fingers get close to the ejection port. I could just see me getting my finger caught in there on the only good hand that I have. LOL!!!! Would have to use nose to dial 911. How embarassing would that be??????????0 -

Wow! We're really stretching the 10-post limit, aren't we? But what fun! O.K.--I'm going to answer within the parameters of your question: good, cheap, 9mm. This is not to say that there is no wisdom in the posts suggesting otherwise; that's just what you asked. My No.1 choice would be one of the currently plentiful Star BM pistols on the market for about $130. I own two of them, and they are excellent pistols. They are, however, single action semi-autos, and that has a lot to do with why they appeal to me-- as they are so much like a 1911. Simple, something I am used to and understand. My next choice, keeping the original specifications in mind, would be an EAA Witness pistol of which I have sold several. It has all the attributes of the CZ pistols with a lot less investment, and if you've got to have double action, well there it is.[:D] 0 -

I don't think anyone has ever invented a better man-stopper than the trusty ol' .45 ACP. For personal defense, my kit is a Glock 36 loaded with Mag Tech and a pair of running shoes. If the 6 rounds from the Glock doesn't stop him, I'm running away as fast as my feet can carry me! 0 -

notdownorout:Using the systema will work.
1. Hold the gun (empty) normally and pull back the hammer.
2. Place it on your lap and put in a full mag.
3. Place your thumb inside the triggerguard and index finger outside underneath the barrel.
4.pull your finger and thumb together and the gun will cycle the rounds. If you have a stovepipe jam this will also clear those. I had you do step 1 because it makes it easier. Step 1 is not necessary if you have a stronger grip. Good luck and tell me how it goes.
Ps: this is a safe method because you are not touching the trigger, you are away from the ejection port and under the barrel.0
