S&W shell casing in new pistol box ?
a buddy bought a new S&W auto pistol , sealed in a small brown envelope was a fired case with the serial # and some inspectors signature & some other writing on the envelope ? I have not bought a new pistol in some time , so what thats all about ....thanks Billy

This is another attempt for police dept. to be able to match up firearms if they are ever used in a crime did it also have a fired bullet that came out of the barrel of this gun? I think some states want you to put the case and bullet on file with them. 0 -
yep my new s&w 500 mag also had a shell case in the brown wrapper but no bullet 0 -
If you live in Maryland, you must bring that SEALED envelope to the police dept to have the spent case kept on file. So far, this has not solved a single crime that I am aware of...just another feel good measure by the liberals.

The authorities hang on to the fired bullet, to match it to future crimes. Basically your buddy bought a fingerprinted gun.

I'm just as paranoid as the next guy..... but this is a wildfire...not to say it's not burning. Maybe I am just 'ignorant' because I live in a more sensible state.
Some companies have put the fired case in with the package as 'evidence' of proof firing at the factory. Some have done this for a LONG time. Some include a target as proof of performance.
I don't live in Maryland, so I can't say what I would do if asked to provide that material.
Does anyone have any regulatory references on this topic?

In NYS the dealer is required to send the fired case to the State Police in Albany. I never had one come in with the fired bullet in a envelope, but I would suppose they would want it also.
Am I the only one who thinks the case's or bullet's would change after a lot of firing, and would be sort of worthless for comparing to the original ?

For those of you who live in States that have governing bodies that view firearms more radically than mine.
I was thinking something similar......I mean if a person needed the security, I suppose he could polish the chamber..can't hurt operation. And maybe change the shape of the end of the firing pin just a tad....those tiny 'indentifiers' would be different. Then I suppose you may want to polish or re-square the bolt face to modify any 'sliding marks' on the base of the casing. The extractor mark, do a minor reshape or replacement.....
OH MAN...I've got a revolver...Which cylinder did they use ? I guess I'll have to polish them all, and the rear contact areas of the frame and loading gate......
ALL this assumes you use a 'recorded' weapon illegally, did not recover your brASS, and still have the weapon.
Have I forgotten anything ? Any paranoid meters shaking ?

At least I'm not the only one who thinks it is in a word all BS that they go through all that on something that will never hold up unless you bought the gun one day and capped someone the very first shot out of your new gun.
How about the rifling wear that occurs, wouldn't that change the I-dentifers on the bullet after a few HV rounds or more were shot. I can assume they would be able to tell what kind of gun it came out of, but who's gun it was ?

Those living in MD have no choice. If a new handgun comes without a sealed fired case, the dealer is unable to transfer the gun. Many manufacturers came up with a solution so that they wouldn't have to develop 50 different types of gun for each state: they notified their distributors not to sell their guns to dealers in MD.
The entire idea was a scam by the company that sold the "ballistic" equipment to the state of MD (& CA). The CA Attorney General issued a report 2 years ago acknowledging that ballistic fingerprinting doesn't work. Just last week the Maryland State Police sent a report to the governor advising him that the "science" behind the program doesn't work; not a single crime in MD has been solved in the 5+ years that the program has been in effect. (MD has spent > $2M per year on the program.)
Those of you familiar with guns could, I'm sure, have told them that this was a waste of time & money. As with the AWB, the fascists will use the failure of this program to justify even more stringent firearms regulations. Increased jail time for violent offenders still doesn't sound reasonable to them.
