Dog's Hearing at Range

I was curious. Can a dog's hearing be adversly effected by the report of firearms. I took my dog to the range yesterday behind the house. He was a little skittish first few shots but settled down before very long. I know it has to effect a dog some but curious as to how much damage can be done.

  I do not know either BUT if you keep them away from under a shooting shed or away from a wall that bounces the sound he should be alright.As you have witnessed with your own hearing, shooting sheds require sound depressors so it is with duck blinds.Keep him out of the blind if it has sides and roof.Open air is best for you both.My two cents worth.

  I would not take him to the range. He will get enough on hunting trips.

  I have seen some use the range as a training aid
  for a puppy or dogs that are gun shy.
  They start 100 yard off then work closer
  sometimes in their box
  I have seen gun shy dogs able to sleep thru
  shots after training

  I should certainly think so. A dog's hearing is much more acute and sensitive than a human's, and we suffer hearing loss from prolonged exposure to the sound of gunfire, so I would assume that a dog would be even more prone to hearing loss than a human.
  
  However, for a more definitive answer, I'd suggest you ask your vet.

  I work with two veterinarians and asked both. Each has worked with dogs that have suffered hearing loss. It is less serious in the hunting field because the dogs are usually further from the guns, but both suggested a shooting range is no place for a dog. If ya gotta take ol' Blue, get him muffs![}:)]

  Enhanced senses do need protection.
  
  All this brought back a memory.
  
  Uncle Phillip was a walking chimney....but for the 90 minutes out to the quail fields, he would not smoke in the car with the dogs.
