Gunstock refinishing
I have a Kleinguenther K14 and I am looking for someone that can professionally refinish the stock. It seems like most gunsmiths advertise stock work but since I have not had this type of work done before I am not sure who the best person to go to is. Anyone had any experience?

What's wrong with it that it needs to be refinished? A partner of mine has an 50yr old custom Obendorf that looked like it had a bad case of the blotches. Some 0000 steel wool and elbow greese, a little military red walnut stain ( used very sparingly ) and a coat of oil and it looks like it has for all but the last 5 to 6 years. My point is that depending on the finish you can probably put it back to right yourself. Just don't go ape with the belt sander, go slow, gentle and keep it simple. 0 -
The urathane finish is cracking badly and I don't want to mess up the cut checkering. I figured a professional could do a better job than me.

There is a gentleman in Alabama who does excellent stock refinishing and his pricing is very reasonable.. He refinished the stock on a custom mauser that I have and it looks excellent. The finish had gotten screwed up when a bottle of blue loctite regurgitated all over the side of the stock. Man will that stuff eat the finish off in a big hurry. Are you saying that the finish in the checkering is comming up or something? Most times you can leave the checkering alone and steel wool and oil around it. I do about a dozen stocks a year and I hate urathane for a upper level finish. What are you looking for, a hard high gloss finish? 0 -
It has a urathane finish, it has some scratchs and dents and the urathane finish now has cracks in it. I want the finish stripped, the scratchs and dents fixed, a new recoil pad installed and the checkering recut. Thanks for the advise but this is still a very nice stock and I don;t feel like I have the ability to do it justice. I am just looking for a referal to someone that has experience in refinishing rifle stocks.

Texas Shooter: Have your stock refinished, and leave a faint outline of the original checkering pattern, and then have the panels re-checkered. I am semi-retired from 21 yrs as a gunsmith but still do checkering in my past time. Am considering doing checkering full time as soon as my shop is finished. Don't recut the original checkering as you probably will not be satisfied with the results. Once your stock has been refinished, I'll cut the new checkering for $125(+-)plus SHI.

Some of the Kliengunthers had skip-line checkering, but that will not be an problem. I live near Jackson, MS.

Thanks to everyone for their help. David with Point Blank Firearms was one of the ones that responded and I just got the stock back and it is beautiful. Dents gone, finish redone, new recoil pad, checkering looks better than new. David's email address is davidk@ijntb.net and I highly recommend his work. Also he was really fast.
