H&R 301 Ultra Full Stocked Carbine
Can anyone comment on the quality and value of these? I just got 2 and was interested in any information.
What I know is: Mfg 1965-1979. FN action, Fajen stocked, handcut checkering, Douglas bbl. They look like pretty nice pieces. Yes I paid too much according to the Blue Book. I see none on Gun Broker regularly or anywhere else, and these are the only ones I have ever seen. Thank you.

These are excellent quality standard 98 Mausers. They generally sell in the 5-6 hundred dollar range when you find one around here.You could not begin to have one built of like quality for that amount. If you like them and want them they are good buys at that or maybe more. Ive owned a couple of them and they were great shooters. 0 -
the 301 is essentially the 300 Ultra wearing a Mannlicher stock. While you often see asking prices in the $500-$600 range, I bought my 300 for $400. They are indeed of good quality. Though H&R lasted a century building utilitarian guns that were safe and reliable, but not well finished, often showing machine marks, the Ultra rifles were very slick indeed, though not very costly. Price went up over the years, but the 301 sold for about $239 in 1971. Calibers were rather limited, if memory serves, .243, .270, .30-06, 7mm Rem Mag. and .300 mag (but I am getting old!) Forgot .308! Receiver is an FN Mauser commercial action. Also cam iwht the Ultragon barrel in .308, .30-06 and .300 Win Mag. Ultragon had "orb-type" rifling. 4 "spiraling ovals that impart spin without leaving sharp impressions on the bullet jacket." Cost $12.00 extra in '71. 0
