Winchester 1897 Experts
I see some listings here that describe the gun as a takedown. What exactly does that mean and how do you know if you have one or not ?

Hello MFI: the Md 1897/97 came in 2 styles, the Solid Frame and the Take down version. Solid frame guns, the barrel screws directly into the receiver, it has no receiver extention. Take downs have a receiver extention. Looking at the bottom of the gun, the solid frames have one serial number stamped on the receiver. The take down you will see two serial numbers, one on the receiver, and the matching serial number on the receiver extention, (it should be matching, LOL if they don't match it's not original!) Barrel comes off. On the mag cap should be a sliding pin to unscrew the mag tube.
I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.0 -
Thanks , I have the takedown version. Is it worth any more ? 0 -
MFI, with all things being equal, one solid frame, one take down in the same condition, the take down usually brings a little more. However Winchester stopped making the solid frame, it was discontinued in the early 30s if I recall correctly. So they are a little bit rarer. Most people prefer the take down. Regards Dave 0
