Don't know who ATF is but he is wrong . Serial # 55XXX would be a 1956 model in the Winchester model 88.

    Hello All...

I have stated this several times thus far on this forum... Madis' serial number information is not accurate, nor is the serial number information found on armscollectors.com.

Now that I have reiterated that, the very first Model 88 was received in the warehouse on May 9th, 1955. Serial number 4 was the first Model 88 shipped (May 18, 1955). In all likleyhood, serial number 554xx and 557xx were manufactured in late 1957 or possibly early 1958... but there are no surviving records to confirm that. I sincerely doubt that Winchester had yet produced 55,000 Model 88s by the end of the year 1956, so I have to disagree with Robert in his ascertion of that year.

Must agree with Bert H. on the Madis info. This is my Madis info, I doubt that Winchester made exactly 18,378 M-88s each year for 1955, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, and 61. Looks to me like an "average per year" of the total 88s made thru that time period.[?][?][?]
