Question?? on serialization

I am planning on purchasing a lower unstamped AR reciever for a .50 cal upper project. Where/how would I go about getting the reciever stamped for .50 BMG and getting a serial number on it? Just trying to get ahead of the game if my state decides to go for a .50BMG ban.

    Well, you can't buy a completed receiver that is unmarked (or unregistered); the best that you can do is buy an 80% receiver, which is just a rough casting. There is no legal requirement to mark a receiver with the caliber. BATFE will assign a serial # to homemade guns upon request, & the requester usually tells them the # that he wants; I'm not sure that they will give you a serial # for a non-existent gun, but you can ask them.

    The serial # on a gun doesn't need to be "stamped", although most gunsmiths will be able to stamp #s by hand. You could also go to your local trophy shop & have the serial # engraved; with aluminum alloy, that should be no problem.

    If your state bans .50, they may not allow grandfathered guns, so all your planning may be for nothing. And, even if they do, your gun won't exist if it's not completed before the ban.

    In the state of Ct. they passed a law that Ar-15 had to registerd by a certain date [i think it was in 1993] or you could not own or buy after that date, you would not be allow to grandfather the gun as nmyers mentioned and you could not sell it to a private party in the state. you could sell it out of state an or to a dealer, you know what that means a lot less money... just a thought before you decide

    If you have to register a firearm and would like to hand it down or will it to sombody else make sure to register it in both names as being owners,,
