Hello the bolt face is to large on your 308 to fit a 223 cartridge rim . Most comp. will not sell you a bolt but savage might.

Midwayusa.com sells the savage conversion parts. You will also need a magazine box, as the 223's will fly out of the 308 box when you try to load them. For what it is going to cost you might as well buy one of the new Stevens 200's in 223 to get the parts, or leave it as is. They are under $300 and appear that all parts will interchange.

The bolt head is about $15.00. Magbox and follower is about $20.00. I bought new bits to complete the bolt head instead of using the stuff that came in the bigger head so that added about another $15 or $20. { actually I bought 2 each to have some spares }. If you want to do it yourself you need the bbl nut wrench $25, action wrench $45 ?? , and bbl vise $45 ?? I just bought the hardwood blocks and clamp the bbl in a hyd press. You also need the go no-go headspace gauges.

To permanently convert the rifle to 223 you are probably better off selling the 308 and buying a 223. If you have a trick trigger, high dollar stock and scope and want to shoot both cartridges then buying all the tools might make sense.

I converted a 30-06 to 223 and added an adj comb stock and a Leupold 24x BR scope. When I started wanting to hunt coyotes I just bought a $275 110 in 223. When converting calibers back and forth you always have to re-zero the scope.

My thought would be not to convert but to buy a .223, Savages are excellent for the money. The conversion is probably cost prohibitive not to mention the pain you go through tinkering with it to make it work right.

We have the second amendment so that all the rest are secure....UNK>

A 22/250 should work with just a barrel swap, ammo cost more but its a better round.
