Minimalist reloading question: which gear?
Quickie question. I'm at the range and decided for target shooting I want to cook up some lightweight 9mm semi-wadcutters.
Thats it. One caliber; one load. Nothing fancy. I've never actually reloaded before, but I am passingly familiar with the process.
The question is, what is the minimum necessary setup for me to do this? Can people suggest specific brands or kits, and maybe other useful gadgets?
Obviously, I don't want to spend too much, but I do want to get only quality equipment that will last a lifetime and that I might be able to use later if I ever decide to scale up.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Go to the on-line catalog of www.midwayusa.com they have reloading equipment up the gazoo in all price ranges. You will get a idea of what's avaiable. They sell "Basic/Starter reloading kits" from most of the prominent manufacturers, these MIGHT? be what you should consider, if your just getting started in reloading. I would personally recommend the Lee products as being the best value for the money.

That's a nice kit, but for starting out, one calibre and one load, here's what I'd recommend.....

I put together a kit for single stage for under $100, and that covered .357/.38 and .45ACP.
My dies were carbide.
Lee Anniversary Kit, 1/2 price + shipping, from a guy on thereloadingbench.
dies, $26 delivered from eBay. Extra scale "nice Reading" donated by a GB member (and given back to another GB member when I got out of it).
I sold my gear for $120, so I made a buck to cover the primers and stuff I gave away in the deal.
Like you, I was doing one caliber - .357, in my case.
One thing I did not buy were calibers; you might need them.

No doubt the cheapest one cal reloader.
They do work..Just slow
I Have 3 (38 spl, 30/30, 30-06) but don't use them any more.

One thought...do you know that your gun will feed that type of bulltet?some do,some jam up on 'em.
having gotten into reloading on the cheap,I would now reccomend just spending the bucks for a square deal b,from Dillon.very user friendly..you can run 1 round thru at a time until ya get the feel of it,then load it up and run it full tilt..but sloooooowly.hurrying just turns a small mistake in to a huge one.
Here's why...a thousand rounds of ammo on a single stage takes thousands of hand movements and manyhours to complete.
On a sq. deal,it's a cople of evenings work.
resale is high if u decide not to load anymore.Dillon equipment is always in demand.

The Lee Hand Press is far better than the the other kit, doesn't cost much more, can be used for all calibers & works great for short runs.
I have had one for a very long time & have used the heck out of it.0 -

That's interesting. Thank you. The progressive press, obviously, is the way to go for serious loading, but at this stage (pun not intended) I just want something tiny that I can throw in a drawer. (Space is an issue). If I can load a box of ammo in an hour, that's probably good enough for me at this point.
Yes, my gun does reliably cycle underloaded flat-nose/semi-wadcutter 9mms. I had never even thought about anything like that until one of the guys at my club gave me a few of his handloads to try. I was really impressed at how much they cut down on the noise and recoil, plus the flat nose makes cleaner holes. He does really well shooting them out of a 9mm Colt 1911 pistol (blasphemy. . .I know). I figure that since 9mms are so cheap, I probably won't save that much money doing this, but I will have a lot more fun shooting, which is the point.0 -

IMHO this hand press is the ideal solution to your request. It has the advantage of being hand held rather than having to be bolted or clamped to a bench (a huge benefit if at the you are reloading at the range). I have seen others do exactly as you have described in your post and this is the press they used. Highly portable, easy to use, and doesn't require many accouterments.
All you would need to purchase is a set of reloading dies, powder, primers, and bullets and you would be ready to go. The Lee Hand Loader will is very reasonably priced and loads very good ammunition.

Minimalist Reloading Gear ?
I don't think I can even say the words.
It can start out small.....like a small SNOWBALL.
Did LEE make the 'handloader' in pistol calibers.
I know I loaded MANY 8x57 rounds with a mallet.
If we do not hang together,
We will most certainly hang separately.0
