.204 Ruger?
I am looking at this round and I really like it but cant find many people who have one or have shot one. If you have experience with this round what is the recoil and noise compared to a .222 or .223? Also i am looking at the gun in the Ruger M77 Standard or the Savage 12FV, which of these rifles would be the better choice in the .204? Thanks.

Quite a lengthy article by Jameson on this cartridge of questionable merit(my opinion of the cartridge not the article) in the FEB issue of SHOOTING TIMES. Please pay particular attention to the pressure and velocity tests. If you are a reloader, forget about shooting even near the factory claimed velocities and you are using a projectile of, on the average 2/3s the weight. Chronograph your loads and get a good ballistics program. You will see that all you really get for the money is bragging rights to the fastest factory round. 0 -
roysha, I beg to differ not only with you but Rick Jamison! Did I read his article? NO! I had it quated and read to me by a couple other folks! He get's paid big bucks to write, I don't! As far as factory velocity, 4149 average for the factory 32 grain VMAX loading is what I've gotten over around 100 firings in different temps and conditions. I have more than acheived this level using Accurate 2230 powder and the 32 VMAX. Do I think he blew up the Sierra 32's at 4000-4100fps? NO!!!! I can't seem to blow them up at 4300 so I question whether they actually were the same production bullets I tested! Also yesterday, I never got any of the 32 VMAXS to disintergrate at 4550! I'll not load them that hot for dogtown use but they did make the trip.....actually shot .586" at that speed. The .204 may not be the deal for everybody but it certainly holds enough accurracy and absolutely negligible recoil so that it is a very fun chambering! And plug in a 32VMAX at 4200fps(bc of .211) vs. a 55VMAX at 3700fps(bc of .255) in your ballistic program.......run it out to 500 yards in a 10mph crosswind! You don't get the acrobatic, blow the varmint to hell, peices scattered everywhere effect you get with some of the bigger projectiles but you do get DEAD varmints and watch the impacts thru the scope!!! I have done the searches on this round but thanks anyway. I really wanted to know how loud it was and how the recoil was comapared to the 222 and 223. And do you think the savage 12fv with accutrigger is a good choice even though it is one of the cheaper models. Thanks 0 -
travis, "How loud it is" is a function of 'HOW GOOD IS YOUR HEARING PROTECTION!!!!!' Yes it's louder than a 222 but not as loud as a 25-06!!! If using protection(which you should even with a 22 rimfire) it isn't bad!!! GHD 0 -
I haven't shot the round but, like you, I'm very interested. Look at the browning a-bolt in the duratouch stock. It fit me like a glove and came up even better. Kinda pricey which in my case is the deciding factor in "want to have and will have". good luck 0 -

I have a Savage 12FV in the 204 and let me tell you it is one accurate rifle. Shoots flat and did a nice job on a coyote. The accutrigger is very nice. In fact, mine is still set at the factory setting. Felt so good I saw no reason to adjust it. My gun is the blued heavy barrel with the synthetic stock and is single shot model.0 -
I went to the gun shop today and they had a Savage 11FNS in .204 ruger. It is a little cheaper than the 12FV but I dont know why. Savage's website had no info on the 11fns. If anyone knows the difference between the 12fv and the 11fns i would appreciate it. Also do you think the 2 guns would be about the same in accuracy? Thanks. 0
