Opinion on Springfield Mil Spec .45?

I don't mean to be a topic hog, but I can't get on here but once in a while. I am also looking at a Springfield .45, Mil Spec, either parkerized or stainless. Its mission role is simply as a "hunting buddy" a .45 to take out in the woods and plink with, ward off two and four legged varmits, and that's about it. Not for competition. So, anyone know how these guns hold up? Are they reliable and shoot well?

    Hello I don't think you can go wrong with anything springfield sells for your use . However I like adjustable or low non adjustable "TARGET TYPE" sights.

    I bought GI WW2 Milspec for my partner as a gift. We have put about 250 to 300rds through it so far. With 2 failure to feeds which I blame on the fact that it's no broken in yet. For a starting 45 they are nice guns.

    I also bought a Rock Island 1911 45 for myself that has been 100% so far, trigger is great, sights like the SA GI are aweful. But it has been a fun gun so far.

    You may also want to look at a Kimber Polymer BP10. Price is right around the same as the SA Non-GI Milspec, gun is lighter, carries more rounds, is made in the USA, and has nicer features on it than the similiary priced Milspec.

    I bought my Springfield parkerized mil type going on ten years ago. I've never had a misfeed or problem with it. I doubt that you can go wrong with it. Still, as a hunting back up is 45acp the righ round for the job. I carry a 22mag revolver. Plinks well, puts down the only mostly dead, pots critters ok and no two leg will be happy if hit. Best of all it is very light compact carry.

    For Perry Shooter: Thanks a million. I have been looking at entry
    level .45's for over a year. Don't want a range
    target gun (not yet) and had just decided on the
    Springfield when someone told me "they heard" that
    these guns had problems. Figured its always best to
    ask the folks who shoot them. Again, thanks! I'll
    let you know how it goes...sure you can shoot it

    drobs, thanks for the excellent advice. Again. I mull over a gun purchase for a long time. After my last child I had to drop out of the "gun of the month club" way out. So now I can't afford to make a mistake. Again, I appreciate your reply.

    ern98: Good point. Again, like the others, I really do appreciate you taking the time to post. If you only knew how long I mull these decisions over. I have catalogues from Kimber, Para, Colt, Smith, Springfield, and so forth spread out (where my wife doesn't see them because she might realize that this is a pattern preceding purchase) and I go back and forth. So this is a big help. Thanks.

    Mine has never failed me. I use it for teaching and general self-defense...in and out of the woods. I prefer the 1/2 style Novak night sights. After better than 1000 rds. and maintained properly it still looks very good....hint: get a good lined holster to carry it in.

    i have/had one. GREAT GUN. had very few jams and they were the result of the ammo (crappy CCI aluminum cased ammo)

    i say had because i just sent it to the local gunsmith to have a but load of work done on it (trigger/ action job, beavertail grip savety etc.)

    a great gun to be used as a base for a project or as a carry or range gun

    The Springfield Mil-Spec is one of the finest machines ever made to
    launch a projectile. They've been used by the military, the FBI, and
    thousands of other police and military organizations around the world.
    Any downtalk can be attributed to folks who have a vested interest in another product most likely.

    I own two at the present. After just a little breaking in, they are
    smooth and reliable. I shoot hardball and Hollow Point and don't have any trouble making 6 inch groups at 50 feet with the regular factory sights, G.I. style. And Springfields have a lifetime waranty. Springfield has a custom shop and many models with a broad scope of options. The truth is I couldn't be happier with my mil-spec G.I.s just the way they came. Of all my guns, and I have several more than a dozen, my Springfield .45s are the ones I reach for at the first sign of trouble and the last ones I'd let go in any case.

    I bought a used stainless GI 1911A1 staliness. I think that it is the older Style becasue i havn't seen any like it at gun shows. But evertime i shoot it there seems to be a failure to extract. i checked the extractor and it fine. also i purchased a new mag and it doesn't seem to matter witch of the 3 that i use. Any advice? i think that i just got a Lemon.

    Hello you did not state if you are useing factory loads or hand loads. Failure to extract is caused by either too heavy of a recoil spring for the load you are shooting. Cure install factory spring and shoot factory load .Or dirty chamber . Cure clean chamber some people buy a SS pistol and use no oil and never clean the gun. or the combination of bad ejector / extractor. Cure replace both parts .The proper way to tell if the spring matches the load is after cleaning and oiling the pistol load one cartridge in magazine load into gun and fire the round if the slide does not stay back this is a sign the slide did not recoil the complete stroke and spring is too strong. quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"

    i am shooting factory 240gr ball ammo. It only fails to extract randomly somtimes i can go a whole clip without failure. when it jams, it seems that the casing is pushed up by the ejector and then it is lodged against the bolt face. i have to drop out the mag and then rechamger the empty beasue it is stuck to the face of the bolt and then i just cycle it by hand and the casing is expelled.

    I have 2 of them,1 parkerized and 1 stainless.With 240 gr ball they operate flawlessly.You cant go wrong with either of the springfields.
