What is the difference between a rifle being classified carbine or rifle??

How much would you say a Winchester 94 is worth? The serial number is x9311. I know that is was made before 1920. My wife's great grandfather bought it from his police department. (after it was released from a case.) 0 -
Condition is the key as well as originality. Need much more info to give you an accurate figure. 0 -
Over 3 million Winchester 94's have been made, in a variety of configurations, so we need a lot more information......caliber; barrel length; round, octagon, or half-octagon barrel; solid frame or takedown; straight stock or pistol grip; with or without saddle ring; and...condition, condition, condition!
Also, you put the "x" on the wrong end of the serial number. If you'd x'd out the last two digits (like 493xx), we could've given you the year it was manufactured.0 -
Hello boliverthegreat: Well with a serial number like x9311, if it's truely a 5 digit serial number gun, even if it falls between 19311-99311 all I can tell you is that it was made somewhere between 1895-1897, according to my Maddis book. (which may or may not be to accurrate). But for right now it falls into the category of "Antique" made before 1898. That in itself adds value. As others have said much more information is needed, to give you anything close to a value. Fill in the missing detals, and I'm sure the value can be pinned down. Regards Dave 0 -

My wife made the post for me while at work.
30-30 (30WCF as marked) round barrel, saddle ring, blueing is somewhat worn however no rust and a shiny barrel-sharp rifeling.
I'm not sure if it is a take down or solid, not familiar. There is a base plate that extends from the trigger down the stock if that helps. Action is smooth as glass with no rust or pitts inside.

1895(year of production....Not Model) I was assuming that the Poster knew the Model of His own gun..........Production began at Serial Number 14760 and ended at 29598 for the Production Run for 1895 Year...Without a hands On, it will be difficult to give an actual appraisal...But if in Very Good Condition and being a Saddle Ring Carbine with Known History, is Possibly Worth in excess of $1500.00.....You need to talk with Bert R., He'll be along shortly I'm Sure....best.............

Hello boliver: Well if you mean the bore is shinney with sharp rifling, that's very good. Assuming it wasn't reblued at some point in time in the last 110 years, you have a KEEPER. If you could post a picture or two, they are worth a thousand words.!!
Capt. you may want to check your serial numbers, I know Winchester didn't make 280000 Md 1995s in 1895! My book shows 1895 ended with 44359. Again I know Maddis' book isn't that accurrate, but he's not off by that much! LOL

1896 production began with 44360 and ended at 32104...Where did You come up with the 1895's...? Big Fingers like me....?...Never mind...! I see what has happened...You assumed that I was referring to the Model 1895 and not the 1894.....Easy enough to do......0 -

Winchester did not send their first 30 W.C.F. chambered Rifles and SRCs to the warehouse until August of 1895. Your SRC is probably a late 1895 or early 1896 manufactured gun. If you contact the Cody Firearms Museum - http://www.bbhc.org/firearms/records.cfm you can order a factory letter that will tell you precisely when it was received in the warehouse (considered to be the manufacture date).
As for the value estimate, I would really prefer to see some pictures of it first, but it will most likely exceed $1500 (could be as much as double that amount... depending upon how it actually looks).
