Question about rebarreling
I am considering a rebarrel on a Savage, I want the 6.5x284 chambering, what Savage long action would be best for this, what are "dies" and doesnt the gunsmith have them already? {6.5x284 is on his list as an available chambering, wont he have all the stuff needed} Will my existing bolt fit the new chamber? any info will help, thanks.

Some of your post is a little confusing...
Dies are for reloading as far as firearms are concerned:
If your gunsmith is referring to dies in some other manner, like barreling, you need to run away from him because he is probably talking about threading dies.
Good gunsmiths use the single point threading technique to thread barrels to mate with a receiver which requires a lathe and lots of practice and more...
Your gunsmith lists 6.5-284 as a reamer which is usually a 6 fluted cylindrical cutter which is the size of the chamber to be cut into the barrel shank. He should have the reamer but he might not have the dies which means that you will have to purchase them. For the 6.5-284 cartridge, there are probably 2 dozen different reamers on file with the reamer makers. You need to determine which one your gunsmith has and if it is the right one that you want. Otherwise, you can use another gunsmith or he can order a new one and you can pay for it and keep it or pay a small fee and the gunsmith gets to keep it.
Your boltface will fit the 6.5-284 case if it is a standard 0.473 rim boltface. But with the Savages, you can change out your boltface if it is the wrong size. I would think that the single shot version of the 12 BVSS-S receiver would be the best action. It's a solid bottom single shot.
That's a lot and maybe confusing so ask if you need more.

Ok that helps, I want a repeating action so I am not sure about the single shot version, why would he not have the dies already? I am really ignorant with this sort of thing, thanks for the help. 0 -
HB, Go to "sharpshooterssupply.com" and check out what they do!! They only do SAVAGES!!!! If I was going to a 6.5/284 it would be a LA!! Go buy yourself a 12 BVSS in 25-06, send it to them and have them build you a 6.5/284 barrel for it and send it back.....yu've got a "switch barrel" rifle now for a pentance of doing the custom rebarreling, throw the old one away deal!!!! You should be able to buy the 25-06 "donor" rifle for $535.00 or so "in the box"!!! GHD 0 -
Thanks GHD, the lady at sharpshooter supply said I need a .308 bolt face in a LA so does the 25-06 and .308 have the same bolt face? I assume they would be the same as the 25-06 is a necked down 30-06 and the .308 is also known as the 30-06 short.[;)] 0 -

I have over 100 sets of dies and I still don't have all of the ones that I need. It would be cost prohibitive for a gunsmith to stock all of the dies that he chambers for on the chance that he could sell some to his customers. Most of us buy our own because it's cheaper. But, he can order them for you so that he will deliver all of your things at one time. It's just that you will probably pay more for that convenience.
I agree with the suggestion to call sharpshooterssupply.com for this work. He is a Savage magician and you can feel free to ask all of the questions that you want and he will give a good answer.

*** You could refer to the .308 Win. as a 30-06 Short but that name is not used in shooting and reloading circles... It was developed as a specific design cartridge.

One more question would the matte finish savage 110fp in 25-06 be a good action to build from, it is about $100 less that the 112bvss? Thanks again guys. 0 -
Gotcha about the 30-06 short stuff, I totally agree and never refer to the .308 as such, I was just thinking outloud 0 -
the finsish on the action means NOTHING,..it is all a function of how well the gunsmith trues the action (lugs vs lug recess mateing, action face, threads on the action, etc) as well as how experienced he is in using his lathe and "indexing" the barrel blank so that it is cut EXACTLY in line with the bore centerline.
As far as dies go,..that is usually up to YOU to purchase your RELOADING dies. If you buy competition dies (Redding comes to mind) with the sliding "sleeve" that fully supports the case, then you can have the gunsmith shorten the sleeve a bit,..and then run his reamer (the same reamer that cuts your chamber) into the sleeve to provide a PERFECT fit so that your fired brass is truly FULLY supported and you will be suprised how straight the ammo comes out of those dies. If you have an arbor press (or buy one ~$80) then but Wilson in-line dies or die blanks and have him use that same reamer to cut the dies,..that is what I have done on a few match rifles and have been very happy with the results.
as for the bolt face, and as has been stated, the .473" boltface will work with any case using that same bolt face dia (243, 22-250, 6mm, 7mm-08, 308, 270, 280, 30-06, etc)

I've got one big question here. If you're going to use a long action and a wildcat (6.5/284) why not use the 6.5/06 and get away from the feed problems associated with the fat, short 284 case?

mobuck, depending on throat length and the projectile used (140+gr pills in 6.5 are looooong) the 6.5-06 may not feed from the box with the pill seated out to the lands. However, a slight opening of the feed rails will allow smooth passage of the 284 case from the follower to the chamber and with the shorter case, the pill can be seated wayyyy long while still not jamming against the feed ramp or top of the barrel chamfor. Feed rails and magazine box differences are the only things seperating the magnum actions from the long actions. Most BR guys are using long actions for the 6.5-284.
Now,..if this is to be a single shot built for extreme accuracy,..then a glue in BR follower and eliminating the magazine well negates any of these features.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
