Puzzler RE: M94
Model 94 in .30-30. Used. Simply will not group. Windage is OK but elevation is all over the place. Rifle is about 40 years old. At first, I thought it just might need a thorough scrubbing. Did so and no difference. Tried 150 gr. and 170 gr. from various manufacturers. Same result. And this is at 50 yards! Best it will do is about five inches from a rest. That's with a cockamamie sight picture that only the shooter can fathom after about fiften rounds. Nothing feels loose or is obviously out of whack. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I know you said nothing feels loose, but have you checked all the screws to make sure that they are tight, including the front barrel band screw? Check the muzzle for nicks that might effect the flight of the bullet as it leaves the barrel? What about the sights? Tight or loose? What about the ammo...try a different brand and bullet weight.[?] 0 -
ndbilly,
A friend had the same condition of not being able to control elevation in groups. We finally tracked the problem to a foreward mounted sling swivel. He was using the sling to hold the rifle down tight & the more he tried to control it, the worse the groups got.
Try again from a rest with no contact with metal. Use a sand bag under the forearm & apply control pressure back to your shoulder, not down onto the rest.

In fact your problem may lie in the other direction, things may be to tight. Remove the forend and see if there are any rub marks on the wood where it has been touching the metal. If there are any high spots, remove a little wood at that spot and try again. Also, on lever guns, I like to have the barrel band a little loose to let the barrel expand as it warms up. I would also fire only three and at most five shots at a time before letting the rifle cool completely. The suggestion to pull the rifle back into your shoulder rather then down is a good one.
Best of luck,
