Buying a gun in another state?

Im from Colorado, but I'm going to be visiting family in Nevada for about 2 weeks.
It just so happens theres gonna be a gunshow close to where Im going during my stay, I was thinking about checking it out, but would I legally be able to buy anything there?

    Only if the person you are purchasing the rifle from is an FFL dealer. As an unlicensed individual you are not allowed to purchase handguns outside of your home state but federal law does allow for you to purchase long guns from out of state dealers if regulations in both states (yours and the dealers) allow for this.

    Is it legal to sell long guns to out of state individuals in Nevada?
    When buying a gun in Nevada from a shop/gunshow/etc, do they check to see if its legal in your state as well before they sell to you, or is it up to you to find out before you bring it back to your state?

    Assuming you will have no trouble with CO state laws, I believe you could have a ffl dealer from NV handle the transfer. The unlicensed individual could transfer the long gun to a Nevada dealer who could then transfer it to you. The BATFE provides a book containng state firearms laws to ffl dealers. The dealer will not, or should not, depend on you to tell him what the CO law allows.

    The book to which Herschel is referring is "State Laws and Published Ordinances - Firearms" (ATF P5300.5). Unfortunately for you, CO has firearms laws that are not only restrictive, but out of sync with federal law; e.g., they have "contiguous state" language that was removed from federal law 15 years ago. For gun show purchases, CO requires a background check by the CBI; no out of state dealer is going to be able to get that done.

    So, the answer to your original question is that you can only buy a firearm from a NV dealer willing to transfer it to a CO dealer, who will then transfer it to you when the transaction is approved.

    I think im going to the same show in vegas. So whats the deal im from commifornia and i see some guy walking arround with say a shotgun for sale. i want to buy it. theres nothing really stopping me from just going up to him, buying the shotgun, taking it home, adding to my collection. No harm no fowl right. Im a god fearing american i should be able to do this right? Damn this state blows. I need to find the state that has the least gun laws and move there.
    Just curious, what sate has the least gun laws?

    Hey mountainman, i think there might be a loophole in there somewhere. If your family lives there and one of them decides to buy you a birthday gift then i think its not a straw purchase... i dunno how that really works. Im pretty new to this stuff and just found how how much it sucks to live in commifornia.

    Another guy who prefers to give an editorial rather than ask a question. Of course you no doubt aready know that as a non licensed CA resident you are prohibited from purchasing and returning home ANY modern firearms from out any of state source. If you feel the need to rant on about how much you hate your home state we have a politics forum as well as general discussion...where you will not find too many people feeling sorry for you.

    Welcome to the forum. You didn't have to tell us that you were new to this stuff. If you want to stay with us long enough to become a junior member, you will forget this garbage about being able to do what you want since you are a God fearing American. You can't do whatever you want; you can only do what federal, state, & local laws say that you can do.

    Federal, state, & local laws leave no room for error. Buy a gun illegally, & you could join the thousands of folks in federal prison, & probably for 5 years. No probation, no parole, no time off for good behavior.

    We don't like many of the gun laws, either. But your only choices are 1) elect representatives willing to change the laws, or 2) move to another state. Even then, you must still comply with federal law.

    Just as an aside, you might also want to check into rules and regulations about how you will transport it home. If you are driving, make sure it is properly stored to satisfy any police dept.'s along the way.

    Guy's, what is the big deal here? It's easy! Go to your local gun shop and ask if they will handle a transfer. If you find a gun at the show, pay for it, then have the seller send the gun to your local dealer for the necessary transfer. If you check out then it's yours! I've done it many times! Why fight the system? It's there to protect us and to try to stop the bad boy's! I love my guns, I love being an American and I love the opportunity to buy, sell and collect. Follow the rules, it's worth it!
