first five shots.....comp question
I started to shoot pistol(.22 @50 ft.) this year in local league and am not doing too bad except for the first five shots. I am all over the paper. After that I settle down and shoot OK (For a beginner, anyway). What do you do to get ready for a match? I do not have time to practice before a match. Dry fire? TIA.....joe

Don't drink any coffee or pop with caffene, get plenty of sleep the night before, tune out distractions and focus on the match, reduce heart rate and do stretching exercises to limber tense muscles.
.....of course John F. Kennedy prior to his televised debate with Richard Nixon was reported to have had sex moments before going on stage...[?]0 -
Dry firing is an excellent way to practice. Dry fining may damage some firearms. I would get expert opinions before doing it. 0 -
[:D] welcome to the human race Joe[:D] It's called monkey on my back
I had that sucker on my back and about everyone else in competition The better you get, the higher the rivalry the tighter the monkey will hold on to you.
There is only one cure....go to as many matches as you can and try to make it like an every day thing. After a while you will find that the presure will subside.
I knew a 22 shooter that was one of the best in the world, he never scoped his shots and used to get mad if any one told him, like>> HEY! you no you shot 5 ten so far.
The main thing is to enjoy it and have fun>>>>good luck in your chosen sport0 -
Joe,
All of the above plus a short program of practice and exercises. I know that this won't set well with a retired Navy man but just bear with me:

(select 'training and techniques' from the left column)
This site has a whole list of good articles regarding shooting and techniques:

Hope this helps and good luck!0 -
I think that if your cleaning the gun before doing the match, that may be your problem. Sometimes a clean to bare metal barrel will not shoot well until it has been shot a few times. It might be something you want to check out.
Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.0 -
Joe- I'd suggest 2 things: shoot your hand gun a few times prior to the match (it could be even a day or two earlier), then don't clean it. This would take care of possible changes in point of impact. But since it's all over the paper, and not a consistent shift, I'd guess it's nerves, and as noted if you dry fire a few times, it may help. Since it's a rimfire, the firing pin would be coming down on the rim portion of the barrel, and would be good for neither the firing pin nor the barrel, so I'd suggest taking a few empty cases and insert one prior to each dry-fire shot to prevent the freefall of the pin. 0 -
All the above, and it will still happen most of the time, until you get many years of doing it behind you. I have the same problem. Eating and drinking habits, practice, not cleaning it before a match all help, but won't cure experience. 0
