Win 1890 Sight Problem
Rear sight elevator was missing, sight was sprung so the elevator couldn't stay in. I ordered a new complete sight from Numrich which did the same thing as soon as I tried to put the elevator in place. The sight seems to have no spring to it at all, just bends with very little pressure. Not much loss, it only cost me $3.11 or so, but I still need a solution. Anyone recommend a good sight? I guess I could get a Lyman peep #2, but have seen some dissatisfaction with it as well. I'd like some opinions from anyone who has worked on the old Winnies.

The description of the rear sight on your rifle does not match what the standard Winchester factory sight actually was for the Model 1890. Is your rear sight stamped "-PAT.JAN.29.1901-"?
The standard rear sight on the Model 1890 does not have a traditional elevator ramp, but instead, it employs an elevator screw. The screw threads through the rear section of the sight, bears against the barrel, and when turned clockwise, it raises the rear sight.

Nope, not like that at all Bert..The one it had when I bought it was an elevator type, and so was the replacement I got from Numrich. Probably neither is original. The front sight by the way is a Marble #2 or something..I don't give a rip about being perfect, I just want to use it. Being original would be great if possible, but that is secondary. It's a beautiful old gun, I think it has been refinished, too pretty to be original.
Therre are no markings at all on the sight, so I'm sure it's aftermarket. Wow my friend, if you could get me back to original, that would be great, but I'll be satisfied with something that will work.

Bert is, of course, absolutely correct about the rear sight. The easiest way to get the correct sight is on ebay; just keep checking and it won't take long for one to show up. Ergo for the front sight. Last year I bought an 1890 that was really quite nice except for a couple of things: the front sight blade was snapped off and the stock was broken (common with these). On ebay I bought: an original blade front sight(special order on the 1890, so correct), a serviceable buttstock that I refinished, and an original Lyman #2 peep. I replaced the original rear sight-which is the correct one-with a blank(just because I prefer the look) and voila!-a pretty nice looking model 90 which is all "correct". Incidentally, I've bought two of the modern Lyman #2 tang peeps for a couple of my other .22's and am extremely happy with them. Midway periodically has them on sale for around $60. If you want to know just about everything about these and the other Win. .22 pumps, get Ned Schwing's large two volume paperback. Barnes & Noble has it. Finding the right "stuff" is half the fun.
