the mach 2 is a stinger case necked down to 17. the hmr is the 22 mag case necked down. More powder = more velocity with the same bullet. hmr is louder. both shoot good for rimfires 0 -
Hey Weed Dude,
I have shot both and they are a little different. I liked both! Many people on this forum don't like either because it's a new concept in rimfires (the HMR isn't going to catch on you know [:D]). In fact, first one in over 100 years.
The HMR is more powerful than the M2 but not much more. Cody had it right. The HMR is based on the 22 mag case and the M2 is based on the LR case. Max muzzle velocity is about 2550 fps for the HMR and 2000 fps with the M2. Both are flat shooting at 100 yards.
Right now firearms for the M2 are just showing up on the market. Kimber was one of the first to release a pistol and rifle. The rifle is about $1000.00 and the pistol maybe $750.00. Both are extremely accurate! The test report I read stated the Kimber rifle 5 shot group at 50 yards could not be measured because it was one hole.
I think ammunition supplies for the M2 are still a little spotty but they should be more consistent soon. Also the variety of aftermarket parts is not quite up to speed yet for the M2 but is coming along.
This is strictly a personal choice. Maybe if a shooting range in your area has rental firearms you could try one of each or find a friend to let you try their .17 just to test it out.
Hope this helps.
