.17 Rifle/Scope
I am planning on purchasing a Ruger 77/17. Any suggestions on what scope I should buy for it. My budget will keep my scope choice under $175 probably. BSA Optics makes a Sweet 17 model designed for the .17 HMR. I don't know much about BSA, any opinions on their products?

You might consider looking around for a used Leupold. That's what I did for my Marlin 17VS. I found a used vari x II 3X9 40mm for $150.00. It shows a little wear but the optics are fine. Shoots great. Sorry, I don't have any experience with BSA. Swift scopes are on special everywhere but I don't know about them either. Good luck

snowman, First off, let me Welcome you to GunBroker!!! I have put together, owned, worked on a bunch of 17HMR's since they became available a couple years ago and one thing I am very certain of is that the accurracy of the 17HMR DESERVES a quality piece of glass on top of it! Now I haven't tried the BSA Sweet 17 in 6x18 but I would like to try one! I am quite fond of the NIKON BUCKMASTER 4.5-14 for use on the 17HMR. $235.00 for one of these from some of the mail order-online places. The Simmons Aatec 3.8-12 has done a good job for the folks I've put them on for. $125.00 from OpticZone (Jon Jakoviac). Right now I have a 4.5-14 Burris Fillfield with BP on one! That's a little different cost catagory! I also have used and mounted a few of the Tasco 6-24 Varmint scopes with mil-dot reticle on the 17's and they have worked satisfactorily for the folks that got them! A 3-9 from anybody is not enough glass for the accurracy capability of the 17HMR! Hope this helps muddy the water or clear it up a bit one!! Good luck with your search and your rifle! GHD PS: Another little side note. You can have a rifle that is just as accurate as the 77/17 for a lot less money and then be able to do a higher quality scope!!! For the 17HMR, I like the Marlin 917VS, Savage 93, and the CZ......all for a lot less than the Ruger and as good or better accuracy!!!! 0 -
Marlin 17vs + Weaver Classic 3x9 scope = Pickup load of dead prarie dogs if ya wanna touch the lil grease stains I agree with GHD it deserves a more powerful scope, but I have the older 17vs and it has dove tail mounts and the weaver classic is the only one in the shop that would clear the bolt handle without putting on a pair of hi rise mounts I wanted to keep the scope as close to the barrel as possible I think the newer Marlins have standard weaver style mounts which I think is a big plus also the weaver scope is a great scope

Hardytyms, A quick fix for the original 17VS and scope mounting for a large diameter objective scope is the Millett rings! They also are windage adjustable much the same as Leupold or other such bases used on centerfires. They allow mounting the bigger glass and still keeping the scope as low to the rifle. I wouldn't recommend the BSA scope, I've see a lot of problems with BSA scopes, even when mounted on Ruger 10/22's, they just don't seem to hold up very well.
For what you're wanting to spend I would recoomend a 4-12x40mm Swift, $155 shipped to your door.
