I need help in picking out a Cowboy Action 12 ga

I need a side-by-side 12 ga with exposed hammers for Cowboy Action Shooting. I have looked at some of the imports, Russian I believe, for about $169 thru Century. I have been looking at other options but don't know anything about these kind of guns. Can anyone advise on a better choice? I cannot afford a high priced gun. $250 is about my max. Thanks in advance.

    I don't know a lot about the side by sides but my brother is using a Norinco pump re-make of the Winchester 1897 shotgun for his cowboy action shooting. Says he REALLY likes it.

    When I started shooting cowboy my shotgun was a Rossi Coachgun with the exposed hammers. Its a nice shooting gun, but too slow as you have to cock the hammers after each reload. I have dropped loads of doves with this gun, by the way.

    To shave a little off my times, I bought a new shotgun with internal hammers. Its the IGA imported by Stoeger. Just break it open, shake out the empties, load and shoot.

    If you still want the look of exposed hammers there are numerous makers of that model.

    Some makes have an auto safety, meaning the safety activates every time you open the gun to reload. I had an action job done on my shotgun which includes de-activating that feature. Keep in mind, the safety still works, it just has to be manually activated.

    You could easily buy a used savage or stevens double for that moneyh,but they don't open wide for loading like the imports.they DO have way better metal in 'em,IMHO>
    In your price range a used Stgoeger is the way to go for a good reliable gun.I['ve used mine for five years for cas and it's a good 'un.
    You could buy a brand new one for just a bit more.their nickel coach gun is sure an eye pleaser.

    I picked up a SXS by Norinco from Big 5 for 199.99. The only thing I hate are all the safeties! Fun gun to shoot though and for the money, not a bad buy.

    If you intend to shoot in the "Classic Cowboy" category, you will have to use the exposed hammers shotgun, as per the regulations. There are various available. I have used a Baikal (russian) which has external hammer cocking capability(with actual external hammers look-alikes) while using an internal firing pin for actual firing. They look very authentic, and are made specifically for CAS, and approved. They have an external "safety" which you need to switch off every time you open the action (needed for import rules)but it can be deactivated easily enough, as the actual "cocking" operation IS the actual safety. They are very affordable. I also have a Stoeger side by side "Coach Gun" with internal firing only, but not for "Classic Cowboy".
