BULLET IDENTIFY

Ballistic
I was given a dozen bullets in a brown paper bag. I first thought they were 45-70 but was mistaken, need help in identifying.

    After consulting COW, the best I could come up with was a 44-60 sharps. Should have a .447 bullet, but it could have been loaded for a loose bore. Pics might help.

    It should be remembered that when Barnes put together 'Cartridges of The World' he copied heavily from other sources. Many of these sources contained errors and the bullet diameter for the .44 and .45 caliber Sharps rifles happen to be one of these errors.
    Bore diameter of .44 caliber Sharps, by actual measurement, gives a land diameter of .446" and a groove diameter of .451". Therefore a bullet diameter of .452" would just about be right.
    .45 caliber Sharps rifles are listed with a bullet diameter of .451", however, the smallest groove diameter .45 caliber Sharps barrel that I ever slugged measured .456" and the largest was .462". Most Sharps .45 caliber barrels have a groove diameter of .458-.459".
